- Alexandrine (Alexine) Tinne (1835-1869), een zeer rijke vrouw uit Den Haag en een fervent reizigster, ondernam in 1861 met een groot gevolg een expeditie naar de bovenloop van de Nijl, die vele levens kostte. Ze bleef trekken door voor Europeanen gevaarlijke gebieden: in 1869 werd haar karavaan in de Sahara overvallen door Toearegs. Zijzelf kwam om het leven: haar lichaam is nooit gevonden. Alexine was de eerste Europese vrouw die het gebied van de Witte Nijl verkende. Willink reconstrueert in dit boek Alexine's leven, met name de periode van 1861-'69 in detail, aan de hand van citaten uit brieven en dagboeken. Hij heeft een aantal nieuwe archieven gevonden en besteedt ook aandacht aan Alexine's werk als fotografe. Het boek is geillustreerd, onder meer met foto's die ze nam van Den Haag. Verder is er nu voor het eerst aandacht voor de verzameling etnografische voorwerpen die ze bijeenbracht, onder meer van Afrikaanse kledingstukken.
