- Description
- Biography of the American feminist, journalist, and activist, Gloria Steinem (1934). This work traces her life and career of feminist activist, providing an examination of her life and her efforts to further equal opportunity among all people, especially women, in the United States from the second half of the 20th century to the present. This book's wider coverage of Steinem's life, from her early childhood to the present, adds to previous works, which tend to stop with the end of the heyday of the women's movement and the rise of the Conservative movement in the early 1980s.

- Description
- The national narrative on Parks is that of a reluctant champion of civil rights whose single action was refusing to move to the back of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955. Theoharis offers a complex portrait of a forceful, determined woman who had long been active before the boycott she inspired and who had an even longer career in civil rights afterward. The image of a quiet seamstress minimizes Parks’ stature as an activist and obscures continued injustice and inequality. Theoharis chronicles Parks’ personal journey to resistance, her work in the South challenging segregation and promoting voter registration, and her continued efforts in Detroit to address racial restrictions that had ostensibly been resolved by civil rights legislation. Theoharis details the cost of the bus boycott to Parks and her family, including decades of death threats: her strong admiration for radical black activists: and the controversies that continue to surround the disposition of her archival material as factions fight to claim rights to her iconic image.

- Description
- The essayist Adela Sloss-Vento (1901-1998) was a powerhouse of activism in South Texas's Lower Rio Grande Valley throughout the Mexican American civil rights movement beginning in 1920 and the subsequent Chicano movement of the 1960s and 1970s. . .This book revives the history of a major female Latina leader. Bringing to light the economic and political transformations that swept through South Texas in the 1920s as ranching declined and agribusiness proliferated, the author situates Sloss-Vento's early years within the context of the Jim Crow/Juan Crow era. . .The author also highlights a partnership with Alonso S. Perales, the principal founder of the League of United Latin American Citizens. It was such a contradiction for her to tolerate LULAC's gender-segregated chapters as Sloss-Vento was an outspoken critic of male privilege in the home and a decidedly progressive wife and mother.
