This is the first study to compare HIV seropositivity and associated risk factors for both clients of male and female prostitutes in the same geographic area. Their relatively high rate of HIV and the number of paid and non-paid sexual partners have indicate the importance of developing intervention techniques at clients of prostitutes.
Public health interventions range from peer education to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV infection to compulsory condom use and screening and, in some cases, isolation of HIV infected persons who continue to put others at risk. Impact evaluations from many parts of the world have shown voluntary increaes in condom use.
