- Description
- This book offers a transnational feminist response to the gender politics of torture and terror from the viewpoint of populations of color who have come to be associated with acts of terror. Using the War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq, this book revisits other such racialized wars in Palestine, Guatemala, India, Algeria, and South Africa. The volume brings counter-terror narratives into dialogue with ideologies of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, class, and religion, addressing the situation of women as both perpetrators and targets of torture, and the possibilities of a dialogue between feminist and queer politics to confront securitized regimes of torture

- Description
- Women enslaved in the Americas came to bear highly gendered reputations among whites—as “scheming Jezebels,” ample and devoted “mammies,” or suffering victims of white male brutality and sexual abuse—that revealed more about the psychology of enslaving than about the courage and creativity of the women enslaved. These images of modern New World slavery contrast with the equally expressive virtual invisibility of the women enslaved in the Old—concealed in harems, represented to meddling colonial rulers as “wives” and “nieces,” taken into African families and kin-groups in subtlely nuanced fashion.

- Description
- Colonial Strangers shows how interpretations of the postcolonial must confront World War II and the Holocaust. Phyllis Lassner’s analysis reveals how writers such as Muriel Spark, Olivia Manning, Rumer Godden, Phyllis Bottome, Elspeth Huxley, and Zadie Smith insist that World War II is critical to understanding how and why the British Empire had to end. .Drawing on memoirs, fiction, reportage, and film adaptations, Colonial Strangers explores the critical perspectives of writers who correct stereotypes of British women as agents of imperialism. They also question their own participation in British claims of moral righteousness and British politics of cultural exploitation. These authors take center stage in debates about connections between the racist ideologies of the Third Reich and the British Empire.

Diverse visies op de relaties van ras en gender worden besproken. Tevens zijn fragmenten van interviews met o.a. Buchi Emecheta en Maryse Condé opgenomen.

- Description
- Brown examines how African American women since the 1970s have found ways to move beyond the 'double consciousness' of the colonized text to develop a healthy subjectivity that attempts to disassociate black subjectivity from its connection to white culture. Brown traces the emergence of this new consciousness from its roots in the Black Aesthetic Movement through important milestones such as the anthology The Black Woman and Essence magazine to the writings of Angela Davis, Toni Cade Bambara, and Jayne Cortez.

- Description
- This book explores the dynamics of cross-dressing and gender performance in contemporary francophone Caribbean cultures through a range of visual and textual media. Original in its comparative focus on the islands of Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe and their diasporic communities in France, this study reveals how opaque strategies of crossing, mimicry and masquerade have enabled resistance to the racialised, gendered and patriarchal classifications of bodies that characterized Enlightenment thought during the French transatlantic slave trade.

- Description

- Description
- Palko undertakes a comparative transnational reading to develop literary models of good mothering. She argues that Irish and Caribbean literary representations of non-normative mothering practices do not reflect dangerous mothering but are rather cultural negotiations of the definition of a good mother. This book demonstrates the commitment to countering the dominant ideologies of maternal self-sacrifice foundational to both Irish and Caribbean nationalist rhetoric, offering instead the possibility of integrating maternal agency into an effective model of female citizenship.

De auteur bekijkt verschijnsel moderniteit, hoge én lage literatuur, jazz, literaire journalistiek, film, radio, maar ook de populariteit van vrouwelijke auteurs en koloniale romans.

- Description
- This book examines Anglophone literature and dynamics of gender and race in relation to Burma and brings a critical lens to contemporary literature, film, and politics through the use of an innovative feminist/queer methodology. The book demonstrates how Burmese women break out of prisons, both real and discursive, by writing themselves into being. Ho assembles an archive that includes George Orwell, Aung San Suu Kyi, critically acclaimed authors Ma Ma Lay and Wendy Law-Yone, and activist Zoya Phan. Her close readings of literature and politicized performances by women in Burma, the Burmese diaspora, and the United States illuminate their contributions as authors, cultural mediators, and practitioner-citizens. These authors articulate regionally situated knowledges and decolonizing viewpoints that interrogate competing transnational hegemonies, such as U.S. moral imperialism and Asian militarized dictatorship.
