- Description
- This collection asks whether feminist perspectives can offer meaningful and viable alternatives to international law norms: and if so, whether that application results in distinguishable differences in outcomes. It answers these questions with particular reference to sources of international law, the public and private divide, State responsibility, State immunities, treaty law, State sovereignty, human rights protection, global governance, and the concept of violence in international law.

- Description
- This book addresses the nature of misogyny: how it travels, what technological and cultural affordances support or obstruct this and what impact expressions of misogyny have in other cultures. It brings together theoretical approaches, while also including reflections on the past, present, and future of feminism and its interconnections with technologies and media. It also addresses the fact that most work on this area has been focused on the Global North, by including perspectives from Pakistan, India and Russia as well as intersectional and transcultural analyses. Finally, it addresses ways in which women fight back and reclaim online spaces, offering practical applications as well as critical analyses.

- The essays in this book reveal the diverse ways black women experience and represent sexuality. The contributors highlight the range of tactics that black women use to express their sexual desires and identities. .The authors take not only an interdisciplinary approach, but also an intergenerational one, in conversation with the foremothers of black feminist studies. In addition, the book explores a diverse archive of representations, covering everything from blues to hip-hop, from Crash to Precious, from Sister Souljah to Edwidge Danticat. Revealing that black female sexuality is anything but a black-and-white issue, this collection demonstrates how to appreciate a whole spectrum of subjectivities, experiences, and desires.

- Description
- Social inequalities have consequences for the everyday lives of women and girls where power relations, institutional and socio-cultural practices make them disadvantaged in terms of disaster preparedness and experience. Chapters in this book unravel how gender and masculinity intersect with age, ethnicity, sexuality and class in specific contexts around the globe. It looks at the various kinds of difficulties for particular groups before, during and after disastrous events such as typhoons, flooding, landslides and earthquakes. It explores how issues of gender hierarchies, patriarchal structures and masculinity are closely related to gender segregation, institutional codes of behaviour and to a denial of environmental crisis.

- Passed in 2000, the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and subsequent seven Resolutions make up the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda. This agenda is an international policy framework addressing the gender-specific impacts of conflict on women and girls, including protection against sexual and gender-based violence, promotion of women's participation in peace and security processes and support for women's roles as peace builders in the prevention of conflict and rebuilding of societies after conflict. The handbook addresses the concepts and early history behind WPS: international institutions involved with the WPS agenda: the implementation of WPS in conflict prevention and connections between WPS and other UN resolutions and agendas

- The twelve essays in this publication present a continuum of cases where the state enables violence against women - from state-sponsored torture to lax prosecution of sexual assault. Some contributors uncover buried histories of state violence against women throughout the twentieth century, in locations as diverse as Ireland, Indonesia, and Guatemala. Others spotlight ongoing struggles to define the state’s role in preventing gendered violence, from domestic abuse policies in the Russian Federation to anti-trafficking laws in the United States.

- Description
- This book examines justice practices for victims that are being used in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. These informal, dialogue-based practices, referred to as 'restorative justice,' seek to decrease the role of the state in responding to crime, and increase the involvement of communities in meeting the needs of victims and offenders. Restorative justice is most commonly used to address youth crimes and is generally not recommended or disallowed for cases of rape, domestic violence, and child sexual abuse. Nevertheless, restorative practices are beginning to be used to address violent crime. This book considers both the dangers and potential benefits of using restorative justice in response to these crimes.

- Description
- This book explores the Bible’s ongoing relevance in contemporary discussions around rape culture and gender violence. Each chapter considers the ways that biblical texts and themes engage with various forms of gender violence, including the subjective, physical violence of rape, the symbolic violence of misogynistic and heteronormative discourses, and the structural violence of patriarchal power systems. The authors within this volume attempt to name the multiple forms of gender violence present within the biblical traditions, contesting the erasure of this violence within both the biblical texts themselves and their interpretive traditions. They also consider the complex connections between biblical gender violence and the perpetuation and validation of rape culture in contemporary popular culture.

- The authors explore whether gendered cultural conceptions influence the way war is remembered and represented, both collectively and individually. The collection discusses the various roles of women during the war from resistance fighter to `German tart’ and how they were dealt with and treated in the aftermath. The chapters examine the position of Jewish victims of persecution, foreign female labourers and gay men, as well as the gendered response exhibited by the courts in post-war trials of female state police employees. The book concludes by following the struggle to bring women’s role in war and peacebuilding onto the international agenda.

- Description
- Despite global undertakings to safeguard the full enjoyment of human rights, culture, traditional practices and religion are widely used to discriminate against women. In this volume 17 scholars approach women's human rights globally, regionally and nationally, combining the perspectives of public and private international law. Comprehensive legal, culture-based and theoretical overviews are combined with analyses of topical issues, such as unbalanced sex-ratios, intercountry adoption, women as refugees or as 'surrogate mothers,' violence against women and cross-border enforcement of protection orders.

- In this book, contributors specifically focus on gender and just cities from a wide range of gendered perspectives that include households, housing, land, gender-based violence, transport, climate, and disasters. From a gender perspective, a separate discourse exists, closely associated with gender justice, particularly in relation to urban rights and democracy. Neither, however, has addressed the implications for women’s accumulation of assets and associated empowerment for transformational pathways to just cities.

- Feminist scholars have demonstrated how dominant discourses frequently reflect patriarchal influence, thereby distorting and depoliticizing women’s storying of their own lives. In this volume researchers provide an examination of women’s attempts to counter-story their lives when prevailing discourses are harmful. As such, it is an exploration of women’s agency and resistance, which highlights the challenges and complexities of such discursive work. The chapters explore women’s resistance across a wide range of experiences, including: intimate partner violence, casual sex, depression, premenstrual change, disordered eating, lesbian identity, women’s work in male-dominated spaces, rape, and child birth.

- Description
- This book provides an overview of the main themes surrounding the history of sexuality from 1500 to the present day. The history of sex and the body is an expanding field in which vibrant debate on, for instance, the history of homosexuality, is developing. This book examines the current scholarship and looks towards future directions across the field. The volume is divided into fourteen thematic chapters, which are split into two chronological sections 1500 – 1750 and 1750 to present day. Focusing on the history of sexuality and the body in the West but also interactions with a broader globe, these thematic chapters survey the major areas of debate and discussion. Covering themes such as science, identity, the gaze, courtship, reproduction, sexual violence and the importance of race, the volume offers a comprehensive view of the history of sex and the body. The book concludes with an afterword in which the reader is invited to consider some of the ‘tensions, problems and areas deserving further scrutiny’.

- A new reflection on rape in wartime, this collection of essays presents 14 case studies, covering conflicts from across the globe, including Greece, Bangladesh, Columbia, Chechnya, Israel, India, Nigeria and Europe. Providing a truly global and interdisciplinary approach - including offerings from experts in legal, anthropological, cultural and gender studies - the authors examine the context in which wartime rape occurs, the specificity of rape as a universally recognised transgression, the place of large scale rape in public memories of war and the long term legacies of rape. They also confront the challenge of writing about intimate forms of violence from both the human and scientific perspective.

Through exploration of areas within Europe and Russia to Africa, America and Asia, this collection presents various forms of interpersonal violence in different times, places, institutional orders and relationships. The book demonstrates how the specificity of temporality and spatiality affect the manifestation of violence, how the dynamics of intersectional and institutional differences are located in social space and time and how the different forms of violence in different times are affectively, conceptually and discursively connected.

- Dorothy Allison gives voice to issues dear to her: poverty, working-class life, domestic violence, feminism and women's relationships, the contemporary South, and gay/lesbian life. The interviews detail Allison's working-class background in Greenville, South Carolina, as the daughter of a waitress. Allison discusses her upbringing, her work (novels, short stories, essays, poetry) and her active participation in the women's movement of the 1970s.
