- Description
- The central argument of this book is that, although love is a crucial site of gendered power asymmetries, it is also a vital source of human empowerment that we cannot live without. Instead of emphasizing 'either-or', the book puts the dualities of love center stage. By offering various theoretical perspectives on what makes love such a central value and motivator for people, this title will increase one’s understanding as to why love can keep people in its grip, even when practiced in ways that deplete and oppress. The contributions within the book present new perspectives on the conditions and characteristics of non-oppressive, mutually enhancing ways of loving.

- Description
- The increasing representation of trans identity throughout art and popular culture in recent years has been paradoxical. Trans visibility is touted as a sign of a liberal society, but it has coincided with a political moment marked both by heightened violence against trans people (especially trans women of color) and by the suppression of trans rights under civil law. This book speculates about a third term : the trapdoor, neither entrance nor exit, but a secret passageway leading elsewhere.

- Description
- This book provides a survey of new work by scholars wholook at the ways gender and sexuality constellate with race. Cutting across the humanities and social sciences, and situated in sites across the black diaspora, the articles challenge notions that we are living in a post-racial age and instead argue for the specificity of black cultural experiences as shaped by gender and sex. The volume underscores the ways an array of violence impacts and shapes black life, while also testifying to the resiliency, creativity, and vitality of black people.

- Description
- This book puts incarcerated women in dialogue with scholars, artists, educators, and activists who live outside of prisons but work on issues connected to the prison industrial complex. Women make up the fastest-growing group within the U.S. prison population, yet prison scholarship largely overlooks the struggles of incarcerated women, and their voices are often silenced both in and out of the prison infrastructure. From the vantage points of those both inside and outside of prisons, this collection of essays and art illuminates many of the experiences and concerns of incarcerated women, including abuse and rape: the policing of women: incarcerated motherhood: mental health issues in prisons: incarcerated women’s artistic and cultural production: and prisons’ impact on families, health, and sexuality.

- The twelve essays in this publication present a continuum of cases where the state enables violence against women - from state-sponsored torture to lax prosecution of sexual assault. Some contributors uncover buried histories of state violence against women throughout the twentieth century, in locations as diverse as Ireland, Indonesia, and Guatemala. Others spotlight ongoing struggles to define the state’s role in preventing gendered violence, from domestic abuse policies in the Russian Federation to anti-trafficking laws in the United States.

- Description
- This collection of articles illuminates the ways in which the concept of female deviance is represented, re-inscribed and refigured in a wide range of texts across time, cultures and genres. The choice of variety shows that representations of deviance accommodate meaning-making spaces and possibilities for resistance in different socio-cultural and literary contexts. The construct of the deviant woman is analysed from literary, sociolinguistic and historical-cultural perspectives, revealing insights about cultures and societies. Furthermore, the studies recognise and explain the significance of the concept of deviance in relation to gender that bespeaks a contemporary cultural concern about narratives of femininity.

- Description
- Published in 1972, New Portuguese Letters addressed censored issues - such as the colonial war, immigration, the Catholic Church, violence, and the legal and social status of women - becoming a symbol of resistance against the Fascist Portuguese regime. Privileging feminist approaches, this volume maps the reception of the book. The scandal that surrounded the banning of New Portuguese Letters and the trial of the three authors for ‘outraging public morals’, brought the case to the attention of the international community. The book found instant support from feminist movements and wn writers such as Simone de Beauvoir, Marguerite Duras, Doris Lessing, Iris Murdoch, Adrienne Rich and Anne Sexton and was adopted as «the first international feminist cause».

- Description
- This book examines justice practices for victims that are being used in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. These informal, dialogue-based practices, referred to as 'restorative justice,' seek to decrease the role of the state in responding to crime, and increase the involvement of communities in meeting the needs of victims and offenders. Restorative justice is most commonly used to address youth crimes and is generally not recommended or disallowed for cases of rape, domestic violence, and child sexual abuse. Nevertheless, restorative practices are beginning to be used to address violent crime. This book considers both the dangers and potential benefits of using restorative justice in response to these crimes.

This book highlights the broader sources of authority that affected the emergence of new feminist actors and agents and their impact on the sociopolitical landscapes of the region.

- Description
- This book analyses the impact of occupation on men and women, both occupied and occupier, in a variety of geographical spaces from Japan to Palestine to Iraq. Gendered perspectives are also intimately tied to analyses of ‘power’: how power is enacted by the occupier: how powerlessness is experienced by the occupied: how power is negotiated, shared, compromised, subverted, reclaimed: power as visible and invisible: institutional power: contested power in post-conflict societies: and power as discursively constructed. The term ‘military occupation’ is interpreted broadly to include occupation, interventions, the presence of military bases and peacekeeping/post-conflict operations.

- Description
- Highlighting the frequent pathologization of animal lovers and animal rights activists, this book examines how the “madness” of our relationships with animals intersects with the “madness” of taking animals seriously. The essays in this volume argue that “animaladies” are expressive of political and psychological discontent and the characterization of animal advocacy as mad or “crazy” distracts attention from broader social unease regarding human exploitation of animal life. Allusions to madness are also often gendered, thought to be overly sentimental with an added sense that emotions are being directed at the wrong species.

- Feminist scholars have demonstrated how dominant discourses frequently reflect patriarchal influence, thereby distorting and depoliticizing women’s storying of their own lives. In this volume researchers provide an examination of women’s attempts to counter-story their lives when prevailing discourses are harmful. As such, it is an exploration of women’s agency and resistance, which highlights the challenges and complexities of such discursive work. The chapters explore women’s resistance across a wide range of experiences, including: intimate partner violence, casual sex, depression, premenstrual change, disordered eating, lesbian identity, women’s work in male-dominated spaces, rape, and child birth.
