- Description

- Description
- The authors of this book probe the effects of global and local forces in reshaping notions of gender, race, class, identity, human rights, and community across Africa and its Diaspora. The essays in this collection employ diverse interdisciplinary approaches--drawing from subjects such as history, sociology, religion, anthropology, gender studies, feminist studies--in an effort to centralize gender as a category of analysis in developing critical perspectives in a globalizing world. From this approach the authors, scholars from Africa, Europe and the United States, hope to illuminate the effects of issues such as international migration, globalization, and cultural continuities among diaspora communities on the articulation of women’s agency, community organization, and identity formation at the local and the global level.

- Description
- For South Asians, food regularly plays a role in how issues of race, class, gender, ethnicity, and national identity are imagined. This book provides food for thought as it considers the metaphors literature, film, and TV shows use to describe Indians abroad. When an immigrant mother in Jhumpa Lahiri's 'The Namesake', combines Rice Krispies, Planters peanuts, onions, salt, lemon juice, and green chili peppers to create a dish similar to one found on Calcutta sidewalks, it not only evokes the character's Americanization, but also her nostalgia for India. Food, Anita Mannur writes, is a central part of the cultural imagination of diasporic populations. Mannur examines the cultural production from the Anglo-American reaches of the South Asian diaspora. Using texts from novels - Chitra Divakaruni's 'Mistress of Spices', and Shani Mootoo's 'Cereus Blooms at Night' - to cookbooks such as Madhur Jaffrey's 'Invitation to Indian Cooking' and Padma Lakshmi's 'Easy Exotic', she illustrates how national identities are consolidated in culinary terms.

- Description
- This volume traces the different ways in which Javanese migrants and migrant communities are connected in their host society and with Java as a real or imagined authoritative source of norms, values and loyalties. The labour element dominates the Indonesian overseas experience. The book also shows how ethnicity, class, gender, religion and hierarchy have shaped the dynamics of diasporic communities. The chapters pay particular attention to gender as, since the 1960s, women for the first time have formed the majority of international migrants, domestic work being the largest category of transnational work.

- Description
- In its theorizing of the intersections of difference—gender, race, class, culture and location—within Africa and between Africa and its Diasporas, this book offers a global representation of the cross cultural experiences of diasporic subjects. The volume offers critical re-assessments of dominant discourses of the diaspora and formations of the subject identities within it. By emphasizing the relevance of intra-diasporic conversations in film, literature and oral tradition, the volume engages core concerns in black diasporic communities : memory (remembering and forgetting), space/location, time, human agency, and shifting exigencies.
