- Description
- History of the UK Women's Liberation Movement. Oral history testimonies power the work, tracing the arc of a feminist life from 1950s girlhoods to late life activism today. The author uses oral history as creative method, making significant use of ‘Sisterhood and After: The Women's Liberation Oral History Project’ to animate still-unresolved controversies of race, class, sexuality, disability, and feminist identity. She provides insight into iconic actions including the Miss World Protest, the fight to protect abortion rights, and the peace protest at Greenham Common. She also explores men's violence and today's demands for trans-liberation as areas of continuing feminist concern.

- Description
- This book examines gender politics during the post-World War II period and the Cold War in the United States and East and West Germany. The authors show how disruptions of older political and social patterns, exposure to new cultures, population shifts, and the rise of consumerism affected gender roles and identities. Comparing all three countries, chapters analyse the ways that gender figured into relations between victor and vanquished and shaped everyday life in both the Western and Soviet blocs. Topics include the gendering of the immediate aftermath of war: the military, politics, and changing masculinities in postwar societies: policies to restore the gender order and foster marriage and family: demobilization and the development of postwar welfare states: and debates over sexuality (gay and straight).

- Description
- For South Asians, food regularly plays a role in how issues of race, class, gender, ethnicity, and national identity are imagined. This book provides food for thought as it considers the metaphors literature, film, and TV shows use to describe Indians abroad. When an immigrant mother in Jhumpa Lahiri's 'The Namesake', combines Rice Krispies, Planters peanuts, onions, salt, lemon juice, and green chili peppers to create a dish similar to one found on Calcutta sidewalks, it not only evokes the character's Americanization, but also her nostalgia for India. Food, Anita Mannur writes, is a central part of the cultural imagination of diasporic populations. Mannur examines the cultural production from the Anglo-American reaches of the South Asian diaspora. Using texts from novels - Chitra Divakaruni's 'Mistress of Spices', and Shani Mootoo's 'Cereus Blooms at Night' - to cookbooks such as Madhur Jaffrey's 'Invitation to Indian Cooking' and Padma Lakshmi's 'Easy Exotic', she illustrates how national identities are consolidated in culinary terms.

- Description
- Byrne reconsiders white identities through white experiences of race. Exploring race, alongside the issues of class and gender, she analyzes the endurability and flexibility of racialized discourse in everyday life, whilst simultaneously arguing for a radical deconstruction of the notions of race these discourses create. .Byrne focuses on the experience of white mother's and their young children, as a key site in the reproduction of class, race and gender subjectivities. Through this, she offers a unique perspective on both the experience of motherhood and on ideas of white identity. She adopts a broad perspective on this issue, looking at local and private examples but also considering national and public debates concerning race.
