- Description
- Talking back and acting out is a collection of writing by women who actively negotiate, reconstruct, and re-imagine their identities in opposition to dominant cultural constructions. The collection explores individual women's refusal to be reduced to hegemonic constructions, prescribed identities, and limited possibilities. The essays highlight stories of women who push the boundaries of what it means to be a woman in this multicultural, yet white supremacist, society.

The book contains portrayals of: Maxine Hong Kingston, Mitsuye Yamada, Joy Kogawa, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Nora Okja Keller and Anchee Min.

- Description
- Focusing on Asian women's experience of immigration, the authors describe the gendered dimension of migration, the different experiences of men to women and the subsequent consequences for women within the constraints of the root culture and the strategies deployed to make life more bearable in the host country. The central argument is that immigrant women are unable to completely break away from the chains of traditional patriarchal norms, imposed by either their host country or root culture.

- Description
- This publication examines migration through the lens of gender and ethnicity and the contribution this perspective makes to migration histories. It focuses on the history of migration to Britain after the second world war. The volume draws on oral narratives as well as documentary and archival research to demonstrate the role played by gender and ethnicity, both in ideas and images of migrants and in migrants' own experiences. The contributors consider a range of migrant and refugee groups who came to Britain in the twentieth century.
