- Description
- In this anniversary edition to celebrate the 35th jubilee of LOVA the focus is on etnographies of gender and the body. Irma Beusink presented a paper at he LOVA conference in Amsterdam, July 2014, using metaphors to analyze differences within feminisms and their translations into the governmental policies and political statements of indigenous women's organizations in Bolivia. Breast cancer is the second most frequent cancer in the world and a mastectomy is the main method of treatment. Mastectomized women must reconstruct the way that they express their femininity and the symbols that identify them. In El Salvador significant changes in social life have occurred due to the levels of violence that the maras, or transnational street gangs, have generated. How adolescent women living in mara-controlled territories associate themselves with the maras and how their associations impact their sexuality and life strategy choices are discussed by Edith Yesenia Pena Sánches en Mónica Paola Zúniga Escobar. Authors describe the corporeality of an ethnographic view of morbid obesity, technoscience and identity by analyzing the story of a woman with morbid obesity in Mexico City. Anorexia nervosa as a health problem shows a prevalence of 0.5 to 5% in Mexico and it is mainly shown in adolescent and young adult women. In his paper Matthew W Maycock shows certain forms of competition and the denial of pain, both of which are integral to being rickshaw drivers, in light of their implications for masculine bodies and performances. The last 10 years has seen an increase in traditional bride abduction (ukuthwala) cases in South Africa. Recent cases share the common element of sexual violence of under-aged girls by much older men, or even groups of men. Diana Dubrovska takes a look at female sex tourism in the Caribbean and Latin America. In her paper Heather Tucker considers the contemporary Euro-American and European interests and outrage over the 'barbarity' of anti-homosexuality legislation in countries in Africa. Ourania Tsiakalou pays attention to the massive detentions of trans women that took place in Greece as well as some other instances of transphobia, as it was presented in the media and in the public sphere.

- Description
- History of the UK Women's Liberation Movement. Oral history testimonies power the work, tracing the arc of a feminist life from 1950s girlhoods to late life activism today. The author uses oral history as creative method, making significant use of ‘Sisterhood and After: The Women's Liberation Oral History Project’ to animate still-unresolved controversies of race, class, sexuality, disability, and feminist identity. She provides insight into iconic actions including the Miss World Protest, the fight to protect abortion rights, and the peace protest at Greenham Common. She also explores men's violence and today's demands for trans-liberation as areas of continuing feminist concern.

- Description
- Using critical race theory and film studies to explore the interconnectedness between cinema and society, the author traces the history of mixed-race representations in American and French filmmaking from early and silent cinema to the present day. With a focus on female black-white mixed race, such as the tragic mulatta figure. Through analyses of over 40 movies, and case studies of key films from the 1910s on, this book illuminates shifts in local and global cinema, exploring discourses of subjectivity, race, gender, sexuality and class.

- Description
- Kristan Poirot demonstrates that contemporary theories about sex, gender, identity, and difference compel a rethinking of the history of feminist movements and their rhetorical practices. .Poirot focuses on five case studies : the circulation of Sojourner Truth's 'Ain't I a Woman?' in early and contemporary feminist contexts: the visual rhetorics of the feminist self-help health movement: the public discourse of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and early nineteenth-century ideas about suffrage, sex, and race: the conflicts over lesbian sexuality in the 1960s and 1970s: and the discourse that surrounds twenty-first-century SlutWalks. In the process, Poirot rethinks the terms through which we understand U.S. feminist movements to explore the ways feminism has questioned sexed distinctions and practices over time.

- Description
- 'WRC developed the Cohort Livelihoods and Risk Analysis (CLARA), an operational approach that captures risks associated with livelihoods, including gender-based violence (GBV), as well as potential risks arising from .programs in response to crisis. CLARA assesses gendered livelihood needs, risks and opportunities, and highlights mitigation strategies for safer, more responsive humanitarian assistance. .During 2015-2016, WRC piloted the CLARA guidance and tool with Oxfam in South Sudan, and in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and with Mercy Corps in northeast Nigeria. .Today more than two-thirds of refugees are living in cities where they face significant risks as they engage in livelihoods, including exploitation, discrimination and various forms of GBV. Intersecting factors exacerbate their vulnerability, including marginalized employment, language, ethnicity, culture, disability, and sexual or gender identity.'

- Description
- In this publication, the author argues that the identity politics surrounding the immigration discourse of early twenty-first century France were reflected in the marketing and editing practices of the Metropole's key publishers, specifically with regards to non-white French women's literature. Overall, the author’s research highlights the discrepancies between France's official discourse on immigration, and the actual identity formation processes created by the institutions and exploited by influential publishers, in the years leading to the historic 2005 banlieue civil unrest.

- Description
- This special section is based on a series of reading seminars, workshops and lectures on the concept of intersectionality held at the VUB Centre of Expertise on Gender, Diversity, and Intersectionality (RHEA) in 2013 and 2014. The focus of these events was on the question of whether and in what way, the concept of intersectionality should inform both policy-oriented research and equality laws and policies. Myra Marx Ferree claims that the travel of intersectionality from the highly racialized context of the United States to the European context implies that feminist scholars should be much more attentive to their proper white (and other) privileges. Power, she says, is a relationship, and intersectionality can therefore only be understood in a dynamic fashion: relations and power struggles - with varying and simultaneous winners and losers - need to put in place stable categories and antipodal positions. Helma Lutz conceives of intersectionality as a heuristic device or a method that allows for uncobring both visible and invisible strands of inequality and processes that underpin privilege and disadvantage. Mieke Verloo addresses the issue of whether positive action is still desirable. By highlighting the impact of positive actions on multiple intersectional categories Verloo shows that specific effects is needed to establish equality. Policy-makers need to be very careful in defining intersectional categories, since they are always contextualized. Dagmar Schiek discusses the field of the feminist and intersectional battle: the EU non-discrimination law. These are some of the essays and articles that shows a wide variety of methods and analyse a diverse set of country cases and intersecting identiy markers and show that intersectionality is a fruitful research area feeding into policy and law-making.
