- Description
- As demands on them intensified, the women working to provide American troops with clothing, medical supplies, and support services became increasingly aware of their key role in the war effort. Middle-class African Americans worked to desegregate voluntary associations such as the Red Cross and the USO, and institute a policy of respectability that would undercut pernicious racial stereotypes. Working-class black women began to use their indispensability in industry to leverage demands for equal employment, welfare and citizenship benefits, fair treatment on factory floors, good working conditions, and other considerations previously denied them.

- Description
- Comparative study of the novels written by five German-speaking women - Anna Gmeyner, Selma Kahn, Hilde Spiel, Martina Wied and Hermynia Zur Mühlen - who had to flee National Socialist Central Europe. The aim of this study is to reassess the women refugee writers' narrative strategies and integrate their work within feminist literary studies. The book situates the novels within the theoretical discussions surrounding exile studies, social history and women's writing. . .Contents: Exile Studies in Germany, Austria and Britain - Feminist readings of women refugee novels - Portrayal of Jewish characters - Representations of women - The possibilities of everyday life - Family sagas as multicultural utopias - Respacialisation of politics - Alternative narrative space.

- Description
Met o.a.

- Description
- During the early twentieth century, individuals and organizations from across the political spectrum launched a sustained effort to eradicate forced prostitution, commonly known as 'white slavery. This book is a comparative study that looks at how these anti-vice campaigns also resulted in the creation of a racial hierarchy in the United States. .Focusing on the intersection of race, gender, and sex in the antiprostitution campaigns, Brian Donovan analyzes the reactions of native-born whites to new immigrant groups in Chicago, to African Americans in New York City, and to Chinese immigrants in San Francisco.
