- Description
- Looking forward to the 100-year anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, this collection of essays looks back at the decades since women won the right to vote to analyze the changes, developments, and even continuities in women's roles in the broad political sphere. Ultimately, the book asks two questions about the last 100 years of women's suffrage: How did the Nineteenth Amendment alter the American political system? and How has women's engagement in politics changed over the last 100 years?

- Description
- Phyllis Chesler was a pioneer of Second Wave Feminism. Chesler and the women who came out between 1972-1975 brought class action lawsuits on behalf of economic discrimination, opened rape crisis lines and shelters for battered women, held marches and sit-ins for abortion and equal rights. They began the first-ever national and international public conversations about birth control and abortion, sexual harassment, violence against women, female orgasm, and a woman’s right to kill in self-defense. The feminist movement has changed over the years, but Chesler knew some of its first pioneers, including Gloria Steinem, Kate Millett and Andrea Dworkin. Some had been viewed as whores, witches, and madwomen, but were changing the world and becoming major players in history.

- Description
- From pop icons to working mothers, women are abandoning feminism in unprecedented numbers. They are also leading the charge to send it to its grave. Women head anti-feminist PR campaigns. This book is a journey into today’s anti-feminist universe and explores generational attitudes, debates over inclusiveness, and differing views on the intersection of race, class, and gender. McKeon asks the uncomfortable question: If women aren’t connecting with feminism, what’s wrong with it?

- Description
- The mid-Seventies represented a watershed era for feminism. A historic National Women's Conference convened in Houston in 1977. The Equal Rights Amendment inched toward passage. Conservative women in the Midwest, saw an event like the International Year of the Woman as part of a conspiracy that would lead to radicalism and one-world government. Kempker delves into how conspiracy theories undermined second wave feminism in the Midwest. She views this phenomenon within the larger history of right-wing fears of subversion during the Cold War. Feminists and conservative women each believed they spoke in women's best interests. Though baffled by the conservative dread of 'collectivism,' feminists compromised by trimming radicals from their ranks. Conservative women proved adept at applying old fears to new targets.

- Description
- Jewish women were instrumental in shaping the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Delving into archival sources and conducting interviews with these pioneers, the author has broken the silence about the confluence of feminism and Jewish identity. This book features biographical narratives that reveal the struggles and achievements of Jewish radical feminists in Chicago, New York and Boston, as well as those who participated in the Jewish feminist movement that fought gender inequities in Jewish religious and secular life. The stories of over forty women’s liberationists and identified Jewish feminists - from Shulamith Firestone and Susan Brownmiller to Rabbis Laura Geller and Rebecca Alpert - illustrate how women’s liberation and Jewish feminism unfolded over the course of the lives of an extraordinary cohort of women, profoundly influencing the social, political, and religious revolutions of our era.

- Description
- Disenfranchised by race and gender, often deprived of a place within the mostly white mainstream feminist movement, black women are objectified, silenced and marginalized with devastating consequences, in ways that are rarely acknowledged in the larger discussion about inequality. In this book Jerkins becomes both narrator and subject to expose the social, cultural, and historical story of black female oppression that influences the black community as well as the white, male-dominated world at large.

- Description
- This book chronicles the influence of second wave feminism on everything from electoral politics to LGBTQ rights. The original descriptions of second wave feminism focused on elite, white voices, obscuring the accomplishments of many activists, as third wave feminists criticized. In this book scholars provide a more complex description of second wave feminism, in which the efforts of women from many races, classes, sexual orientations, and religious traditions, in the fight for equality have had a long-term impact on American politics.
