- Description
- Discussion paper about conflict-related sexual violence. Most victims of armed conflicts who are subjected to rape, sexual slavery and forced marriage, are women and children. The authors consider some practical examples including the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the extremist groups Boko Haram (Nigeria) and Islamic State (Iraq and Syria). They view sexual violence in conflict not only as a violation of human rights but it also leads to increase of armed conflict costs, weakening of governance and destabilization of communities. Finally, the authors provide suggestions for the US government to combat conflict-related sexual violence in US security cooperation efforts.

- Description
- This book explores the experiences of a range of women from the early days of 1914, through the events of the war on the Eastern Front. Their diaries, letters, memoirs and journalism are used to investigate the role played by British women during the fall of Serbia, the Russian Revolution and the final push, and their role in reconstruction following the Armistice. These women, and their writings, are examined through the multiple lenses of gender, nationality, patriotism, imperialism and legacy, but the book also tells the stories of individuals.

- Description
- This volume contains historical narratives about the contributions of women in the American military, from the American Revolution to the present wars in the Middle East. Based on diaries, letters, oral histories and memoirs, these women reveal why and how they chose to serve their country. For example, Harriet Tubman (1820-1913) tells her experiences as the first American woman to lead an invasion, freeing some 750 slaves. Linda Bray (1960-) tells about her leading of troops into combat during the war in Panama in the 1980s.

- Description
- This book presents a global analysis of the extent to which women are engaged in armed, organized rebellions, and why they choose to join such rebellions. Henshaw has collected and analyzed data on women’s participation in over 70 post-Cold War rebel groups. The book reveals that women are active in over half of all rebel groups sampled and that, while the majority of rebel groups have women serving in support roles away from direct combat, approximately a third of these groups employ women in the conduct of armed attacks, and just over a quarter have women in a leadership capacity.

- Description
- Narratives of crusading have often been overlooked as a source for the history of women. Yet women consistently appeared in the histories of crusade and settlement, performing a variety of roles. While some were defamed as 'useless mouths' or prostitutes, others undertook servile tasks for the army, went on crusade and gained political recognition in the Levant and and the West. This book compares perceptions of women from a wide range of historical narratives. It includes eyewitness accounts and conventual chronicles that referred to major crusade expeditions and the settler society in the Holy Land. It addresses how authors used events involving women and stereotypes based on gender, family role, and social status in writing their histories: how they blended historia and fabula, speculated on women's motivations, and occasionally granted them a literary voice in order to connect with their audience, impart moral advice, and justify the crusade ideal.

- Description
- In the spring of 1994, the African nation of Rwanda was ripped apart by a genocide that left nearly a million dead. After the violence subsided, Rwanda's women carved out new roles for themselves as visionary pioneers creating stability and reconciliation in genocide's wake. Today, 64 percent of the seats in Rwanda's elected house of Parliament are held by women, a number unrivaled by any other nation. Hunt shares the stories of some seventy women—heralded activists and unsung heroes alike—who overcame unfathomable brutality, unrecoverable loss, and unending challenges to rebuild Rwandan society.
