- Description
- To Kill a Mockingbird—the twentieth century’s most widely read American novel—has sold thirty million copies and still sells a million yearly. Yet despite her book’s perennial popularity, its creator, Harper Lee, has become a somewhat mysterious figure. At the center of Shields’s book is the story of Lee’s struggle to create her novel, but her life contains many highlights—her girlhood as a tomboy in overalls in tiny Monroeville, Alabama: the murder trial that made her father’s reputation and inspired her great work: her journey to Kansas as Truman Capote’s ally and research assistant to help report the story of In Cold Blood.

- Description
- For their wit, intelligence, good looks, and politics, the aristocratic Mitford sisters were the toast of the mid-twentieth century. They were prodigious correspondents, particularly between each other. Mosley, daughter-in-law of Diana Mitford, has selected and excerpted from some 12,000 letters between the sisters over a period of almost 80 years. As friends and confidantes of noted figures of their time, from royals to statesmen to artists, the sisters drop prominent names offhandedly. Notable for their humor and compassion, these letters reveal Nancy's sharp tongue: Pamela's love of the land (but not of children): Diana's lifelong devotion to her fascist husband, Sir Oswald Mosley: Unity's infatuation with Hitler: and Deborah's role as peacemaker. Jessica scandalized her family by running away with her Communist cousin.

- Description
- Maria Gaetana Agnesi (1718-1799) is best known for her curve, 'the witch of Agnesi'. She was a child prodigy who frequented the salon circuit, discussing mathematics, philosophy, history, and music in multiple languages. At twenty she wrote a collection of essays on philosophy and natural science. Later she wrote one of the first vernacular textbooks on calculus and the first book on mathematics by a woman, and was appointed chair of mathematics at the university in Bologna. In later years she became a prominent figure within the Catholic Enlightenment, gave up the academic world, and devoted herself to charitable organisations. This biography explores how Agnesi related to her world, and illuminates the achievements of eighteenth century Italian women in comparison to other European women and their status and access to scientific life.
