- Description
- This book examines the theme of widowhood, over the last 150 years, in Indian novels, written in eight Indian languages. The author shows how these novels reveal attitudes, often contradictory, towards widows in upper-caste Hindu society. They have been variously perceived as ascetics, victims, romantic or tragic heroines, sirens, rebels, individuals in search of a social identity, and even as mother-figures embodying the values of the entire community or nation.

- Description
- The essays in this volume seek to introduce a level of theoretical analysis by means of close readings of situations in which women are given or denied authority in ritual and interpretive contexts. This approach encompasses not only how women are represented, but also particular strategies of debate about women, how women are depicted as negotiating certain kinds of authority: and how women might resist traditional authority in specific colonial and post colonial situations.

- Description
- The book focuses on how the notion of being 'high caste, as it developed and transformed during the colonial period, contributed to the formation of a 'middle class' among the Hindus and the Sikhs in the Punjab. This had an impact on gender relations, as caste was seen as a quality 'attached' to men, making women's relationship to it ambiguous.

- Description
- This book is about the devotional subcultures created by women. Its authors draw their evidence and inspiration from Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic and Christian traditions. Here we find women as healers, goddesses, saints, gurus, nuns and heretics - all sharing a defiance of orthodoxy and fundamentalist oppressions of women.. As well as revealing little known aspects of the feminine within the great religions, this book reflects the newly emerging spirituality of women as they experience and respond actively to the political and social injustices they confront. Its authors are all women from the Third World who see themselves as religious, but who are at the same time competent scholars in their different disciplines

- Description
- The Hindu custom of dowry has long been blamed for the murder of wives and female infants in India. Oldenburg agues that these killings are neither about dowry nor an Indian culture of caste system that encourages violence against women, rather, such killings can be traced directly to the influences of the British colonial era and the resultant legislation.
