- Description
- After the attacks of September 11, 2001, the plight of Afghan women under Taliban rule was widely publicized in the United States as one of the humanitarian issues justifying intervention. This book explores the contradictions, ambiguities, and unintended effects of the emancipatory projects for Afghan women designed and imposed by external organizations. Billaud introduces readers to daily life in Afghanistan through portraits of women targeted by international aid policies. Examining encounters between international experts in gender and transitional justice, Afghan civil servants and NGO staff, and women unaffiliated with these organizations, Billaud unpacks some of the paradoxes that arise from competing understandings of democracy and rights practices.

- Description
- Women's biographical Lexicon - women's memories : searching for identity within socialism. The first section of the book is comprised of ten selected interviews with women from various educational backgrounds, professions, economic and family status, who spended the greater part of their lives within socialism. Second section of the book is comprised of the Lexicon on Women’s Biographies in Socialism through which the authors endeavoured to draw emphasis to individual places from the interviews which they felt were important for further deliberation on the lives of women within socialism. These places reveal the personal, individual areas of a woman’s life from which and with which she identifies, and which at the same time identify her as well. Including stories about how women spent their time, how they responded to questions relating to their intimacy, emotions, whether they follow fashions, and with what they identify themselves, etc. Appendix: texts on reproductive rights, the political, economic and educational participation of women in socialist society, and a storybook of cultural events in the time of socialism. With a 'summary' in English and German.

- Description
- Beyond the Frame explores the importance of visual images in the identities and material conditions of women of color as they relate to social power, oppression, and resistance. The goal of the collection is to rethink the category of visual theory through women of color. It also explores the political and social ramifications of visual imagery for women of color, and the political consciousness that can emerge alongside a critical understanding of the impact of visual imagery. The book begins with a general exploration of what it means to develop a women of color criticism (rather than an analysis of women of color), and goes on to look specifically at topics such as 90s fashion advertisements, the politics of cosmetic surgery, and female fans of East LA rock bands.
