- Description
- The essays in this volume discuss narrative strategies employed by international writers when dealing with sexual violencein literature. In developing these feminist readings of rape narratives, the contributors aim to incorporate arguments about trauma and resistance in order to establish new dimensions of healing. The volume considers sexual violence from a number of different angles. Part one considers how the characters of the victim and rapist might be subverted in narratives of sexual violence. In the second part the essays explore how writers approach the subject of rape obliquely using metaphors to represent their suffering and pain. The controversy of not speaking about sexual violence is the focus of the next part, while the last part of the book considers the problems of making sexual violence visible in the poetic image, in film and on stage. The book covers a range of writers which includes like Toni Morrison, Sarah Kane, Sandra Cisneros, Nawal El Saadawi, Yvonne Vera, and Sharon Olds.

- Description
- Despite the many changes there have been to the law, practice and procedure in the investigation of rape allegations, and support available for victims, victims are still often blamed for their victimization. Only a very small number of perpetrators ever face prosecution, let alone conviction. This book aims to take stock of current thinking and research about rape and the way it is handled in practice within the criminal justice system, and to challenge some of the widely held but inaccurate beliefs about rape. The main focus of the book is on adult victims of rape, with chapters exploring such issues as rape and the media, the use of alcohol and drugs in rape, police decision making on rape cases, conviction patterns in rape trials, and interviewing victims of rape and sexual assault.

- Description
- Originally conceived by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989 as a tool for the analysis of the ways in which different forms of social inequality, oppression and discrimination interact and overlap in multidimensional ways, the concept of 'intersectionality' has attracted much attention in international feminist debates over the last decade. This book brings together proponents and critics of the concept. Engaging with the historical roots of intersectionality in the US-based 'race-class-gender' debate, this book also considers the European adoption of this concept in different national contexts, to explore issues such as migration, identity, media coverage of sexual violence against men and transnational livelihoods of high and low skilled migrants. Thematically arranged around the themes of the transatlantic migration of intersectionality, the development of intersectionality as a theory, men's studies and masculinities, and the body and embodiment, this book draws on empirical case studies as well as theoretical research.

- Description
- This volume examines the interrelationship of women, violence, and media presentations. The book is divided into three sections. The first, “Gendering Constructions,” examins the print media’s presentation of gendered violence, female killers on Law and Order, African American women in Hollywood films, and women in media, crime, and violence textbooks. The second section, “Debating the Issues,” explores aspects of femicide, including mass murder incidents, domestic violence in Bangladesh, and wartime sexual violence in reality and on television. The final section “Changing the Image,” focuses on efforts to replace masculine assumptions with constructive approaches to imagining women.
