- Description
- Michele Wallace burst into public consciousness with the 1978 publication of Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman, a pioneering critique of the misogyny of the Black Power movement and the effects of racism and sexism on black women. Since then, Wallace has produced an extraordinary body of journalism and criticism engaging with popular culture and gender and racial politics. This collection brings together more than fifty of the articles she has written over the past fifteen years. Included alongside many of her best-known pieces are previously unpublished essays as well as interviews conducted with Wallace about her work. Dark Designs and Visual Culture charts the development of a singular, pathbreaking black feminist consciousness.

- Description
- Overview of popular feminist fiction from the late 1960s to the end of the 1990s, looking at how key feminist texts such as 'The Women's Room', 'Kinflicks' and 'Fear of Flying' have influenced popular contemporary works such as 'Bridget Jones' Diary' and 'Sex and the City'. Whelehan argues how feminism still shapes women's writing today, even when such writing seems to ignore or reject feminism.

- Description
- Originally a euphemism 'chick lit' mutated from a movement in American women's avant-garde fiction in the 1990s to become, by the turn of the century, a humorous subset of women's literature, journalism, and advice manuals. Harzewski examines such best sellers as Bridget Jones's Diary, The Devil Wears Prada, and Sex and the City as urban appropriations of and departures from the narrative traditions of the novel of manners, the popular romance, and the bildungsroman. Further, Harzewski uses chick lit as a lens through which to view gender relations in U.S. and British society in the 1990s. The book is a historicization of this major pop-cultural phenomenon, and Harzewski demonstrates how chick lit and the critical study of it yield social observations on upheavals in Anglo-American marriage and education patterns, heterosexual rituals, feminism, and postmodern values.

- Description
- In this book Drake contends that characterizations of black females arise from multiple creative outlets, literature, film, and music videos, and reflect African American women's evolving concept of home, community, gender, and family. Through a close examination of Toni Morrison's Paradise, Gayl Jones's Corregidora, Erna Brodber's Louisiana, and Kasi Lemmons's film Eve's Bayou, as well as Beyoncé Knowles's B-Day album and music-video collaboration with Shakira, 'Beautiful Liar,' Drake reveals how concepts of hybridity, whether positioned as créolité, Candomblé, négritude, Latinidad, or Brasilidade, are appropriated in each work of art as a way of challenging the homogeneous paradigm of black cultural studies. This redefined notion of identity enables African American women to embrace a more complex, transnational blackness that is not only more liberating but also more pertinent to their experiences.
