- Description
- This collection of essays describes the use of cross-gendered voices by authors from the 1850s to the present. The essays show that writing in the voice of the other gender is a long-standing literary phenomenon. The book provides historical and literary information and concentrates on the subjectivity of cross-gendered voices in modernist and late modernist work.

- Description
- Analysis of representations of women as linked to death, produced by women writers and artists. Religious rituals, literature, film and war journalism are analysed. A central question is whether female writers and artists have rejected the dominant discourses of sexual fascination around women and death and produced different representations. Attention is paid to the cultural change in the 18th century, whereby death became more pronouncedly gendered than in the early modern period. This was in keeping with the new emphasis on sexual dichotomy in medicine, anthropology and philosophy.

- Description
- This special issue is dedicated to the theme of Women Writers and Intellectuals. Virtually no women are part of the literary/intellectual canon from Russia to Greece, and when women do appear as writers, they are generally cast as an exception, or as marginal or incidental. Their presence, in other words, only serves to reinforce, explicitly and implicitly, the masculine ideal that defines the Central, Eastern and Southeastern European intelligentsia. Yet women wrote, both in private and public. The articles written by contributors to this issue fall into two categories: those that consider the invisibility of women at the heart of the literary canon and those that reshape the images of the intelligentsia in the modern history of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. With forum: Contemporary women writers and intellectuals.
