- Description
- This book explores the experiences of a range of women from the early days of 1914, through the events of the war on the Eastern Front. Their diaries, letters, memoirs and journalism are used to investigate the role played by British women during the fall of Serbia, the Russian Revolution and the final push, and their role in reconstruction following the Armistice. These women, and their writings, are examined through the multiple lenses of gender, nationality, patriotism, imperialism and legacy, but the book also tells the stories of individuals.

- Description
- In this publication the authors give insight in how diverse women in America understand, explain, and act upon their varied constraints, positions, responsibilities, and worldviews in changing American society between the end of the Revolution and the beginning of the Civil War. They identify three phases in the changing relationship of women to civic and political activities. They first situate women as ‘deferential domestics’ in a world of conservative gender expectations: then map out the development of an ideology that allowed women to leverage their familial responsibilities into participation as ‘companionate co-workers’ in movements of religion, reform, and social welfare: and finally trace the path of those who followed their causes into the world of politics as ‘passionate partisans’. The book includes a selection of primary documents that encompasses both well-known works and previously unpublished texts from a variety of genres.

- Description
- The author of this book looks at how and under what conditions feminist consciousness is created. What forms of mobilization foster feminist agency and what factors hinder its realization? These critical questions have been the subject of debate among feminist scholars in women’s studies for three decades. In this study, Disney traces the mobilization of women in two revolutionary contexts, comparing the strategies and the outcomes of various organizational forms developed in Mozambique and in Nicaragua over the past 30 years. By examining two socialist revolutions in the global South, Disney investigates the contours of women’s emancipation outside the framework of liberal democracy and a market economy. She interviews 146 women and men in the two countries to explore the comparative contribution of women’s participation in subsistence and informal economies, political parties and civil society organizations. She also discusses military struggles against colonialism and imperialism in fostering feminist agency to provide a look at how each movement evolved and how it changed in a post-revolutionary climate.

- Description
- Historical and literary scholars have become increasingly interested in women's roles in and approaches to war. In times of conflict, French and francophone women have made crucial contributions in aid of the patrie, but wars have also set women against the governing powers, frequently forcing them to choose between their concerns as women, and the economic and social demands of their belligerent nations. This book brings together scholars from different academic disciplines - history, sociology, politics, literary criticism and gender studies - who explore the impact of war upon women in French and francophone societies.

- Description
- Described is the upcoming of elite women in Eritrea, encompassing the time of the armed struggle for liberation as well as its aftermath up to the tenth anniversary of Eritrean independence in 2001 and beyond. An analysis of Eritrean history, the society and political developments, are given. Modernisation processes created by the Eritrean revolution fostered an environment in which women are regarded as equal and encouraged to occupy positions of leadership. At the same time, the revolution's ideology does not envisage women opting out of its version of modernity, thus new avenues open up only for those who subscribe to the revolution's narrative of progress. Furthermore, it is argued that while the Eritrean revolution played a decisive role in opening up possibilities for women's emancipation, a failure to implement democratic structures of governance puts the revolution's societal achievements at risk.

- Description
- An outstanding feature of the Eritrean struggle for independence was the heavy participation of women in the fighting force. By the end of the thirty-year long struggle, women comprised about one third of the Eritrean People's LiberationFront, serving alongside men in all capacities except the top ranks of leadership. The war ended in 1991, and independence was officially achieved in 1993. Since then, Eritrean women have confronted another equally monumental struggle to build secure economic, political, and social positions for themselves within the nation. Women fighters who spent much of their adult lives in the guerrilla movement face the challenges of reintegrating into civilian life. Women ex-fighters lack resources, skills, and jobs. They feel that they are being devalued inthe new society of independent Eritrea. Some women fighters have been divorced for civilianwomen. These heroes of the nationalist struggle are finding that the very qualities that made them good soldiers and comrades stigmatize them as wives and potential wives. Former women fighters are seen as having experienced independence, sexual freedom, and equality with men. They fought side by side with men and killed enemy men. Their morality is suspect, theirfemininity is doubtful, and their ability to behave as obedient wives is questionable. Although national liberation has been achieved, the emancipation of women is at best incomplete.'
