- Description
- The contributors to this book examine women and the construction of gender thematically, dealing with the areas of politics, law, religion, sexuality, literature and economics, and in a variety of social categories, from Christians and Moriscas, queens and merchants, peasants and visionaries, heretics and madwomen. The essays cover different regions in the Spanish monarchy, including Andalusia, Aragon, Castile, Catalonia, Valencia and Spanish America, from the fifteenth century through to the eighteenth century. The book focuses on two central themes: gender relations in the shaping of family and community life, and women's authority in spheres of power. The representation of women in a variety of texts such as poetry, court cases, or even account books illustrate the multifaceted world in which women lived, constantly choosing and negotiating their identities.

- Women enslaved in the Americas came to bear highly gendered reputations among whites—as “scheming Jezebels,” ample and devoted “mammies,” or suffering victims of white male brutality and sexual abuse—that revealed more about the psychology of enslaving than about the courage and creativity of the women enslaved. These images of modern New World slavery contrast with the equally expressive virtual invisibility of the women enslaved in the Old—concealed in harems, represented to meddling colonial rulers as “wives” and “nieces,” taken into African families and kin-groups in subtlely nuanced fashion.

- The essays in this book reveal the diverse ways black women experience and represent sexuality. The contributors highlight the range of tactics that black women use to express their sexual desires and identities. .The authors take not only an interdisciplinary approach, but also an intergenerational one, in conversation with the foremothers of black feminist studies. In addition, the book explores a diverse archive of representations, covering everything from blues to hip-hop, from Crash to Precious, from Sister Souljah to Edwidge Danticat. Revealing that black female sexuality is anything but a black-and-white issue, this collection demonstrates how to appreciate a whole spectrum of subjectivities, experiences, and desires.

- This book considers six authors who use experimental methods and negative modes of critique in their fiction and feminism. The authors covered are Valerie Solanas, Kathy Acker, Theresa Cha, Chantel Chawaf, Jeanette Winterson, and Lynda Barry. These writers share a commitment to combining extreme content with formally radical techniques in order to enact varieties of gender, sex, race, class and nation-based experience that, they suggest, may only be “represented” accurately through the experimental unmaking of dominant structures of rationality.

- This book investigates the relationship between obscenity, gender and pedagogy in Middle English and Middle Scots literature from 1300 to 1580. This shows the sexual explicitness and vulgarness of speech which taught readers and listeners about sexual behavior and consent.. .Through readings of literary texts including erotic lyrics, single-woman's songs, debate poems between men and women, Scottish insult poetry battles and The Canterbury Tales, the author demonstrates how obscenity taught audiences about gender, sex, pleasure and power in both positive and harmful ways. Finally she discusses the fact that use of obsenity referring to contemporary issues of gender, violence and misogyny.

- This article examines novels by Alix Kates Shulman, Marge Piercy and Erica Jong. These novels published in the early seventies were inspired by existentialism and Beauvoir, but reached mass audiences because they were also novels of the (hetero)sexual revolution. These texts carved out a radical terrain of subjectivity for women as they fought individually and collectively to reject a medicalised vocabulary and to discover their own sexual language

- Description
- This analysis gauges gender difference in time spent reading romance novels and sexuality. Respondents were 770 white American college students, including 436 females and 334 males, age 17–49. Males are viewed as a reference group. Drawing upon the 'plastic sexuality' thesis and feminist theory, this study hypothesizes that female readers of romance novels have higher levels of interest in sexuality (at least in the attitudes) than male readers, and non-readers but such a sexual interest is not necessarily converted into a more active sexual behavior. Most romance novels promote deeply constraining patriarchal values, reading romance novels plays a role in shaping the meaning of the self, sexual identity and attitudes and behavior relative to this patriarchy. The results indicate that due to a higher degree of plastic sexuality, female readers of romance novels self-reported greater sex drive, and greater number or orgasms required for sexual satisfaction than male readers and female non-readers. However, female readers had fewer sex partners, and were older when they first thought about sex and had their first sexual intercourse. This pattern fits the Harlequin romance characterization: female readers nourish a fulfilling sex life in the context of idealistic monogamous faithfulness, while at the same time vividly satisfying desires and sexual fantasy through fabricated characters.

- State of present knowledge on (homo)sexuality in African literature and film. The contributors describe the need to separate sex from gender, the correlation between gender and sex as categories of human identities, and between gender and creative artistic practices. They look at characterization, textual and filmic structure and plot in terms of identification. The contributors examine among others: the prevailing views on gender and sexuality, differences of viewpoint between literature and film, the evolution of human sexuality throughout African history, and the role of genre and race.

- The refusal to recognize kinship relations among slaves, interracial couples, and same-sex partners is steeped in historical and cultural taboos. In this book Peterson explores the ways in which non-normative relationships bear the stigma of death that American culture vehemently denies.Probing Derrida’s notion of spectrality as well as Orlando Patterson’s concept of “social death,” Peterson examines how death, mourning, and violence condition all kinship relations. Through Charles Chesnutt’s The Conjure Woman, Peterson lays bare concepts of self-possession and dispossession, freedom and slavery. He reads Toni Morrison’s Beloved against theoretical and historical accounts of ethics, kinship, and violence in order to ask what it means to claim one’s kin as property. He concludes that socially dead “others” can be reanimated only if we avow the mortality and mourning that lie at the root of all kinship relations.

- Description
- Feminisme.

- Description
- This book demonstrates how fiction and medicine have a tradition of looking towards each other for inspiration in questions of gender. Medical textbooks and pamphlets have cited fictional plots and characterisations as a way of communicating complex or 'sensitive' ideas. Essays explore historical accounts of clinical procedures, the relationship between gynaecology and psychology, and cultural conceptions of motherhood, fertility, and the female organisation through a broad range of texts including Henry More's Pre-Existency of the Soul (1659), Charlotte Brontë's Villette (1855), and Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues (1998).

- Description
- This volume focuses on the work of exiled women writers and journalists as well as on gendered representations in the writing of both male and female exiled writers. The contributions are in English or German. The seventeen contributions set out to both celebrate and critically examine the concepts of gender and sexuality in exile in a wide range of texts by well-known and lesser known authors, and throw light on many different aspects of gendered authorship and gendered relations. The volume also looks at two bibliographic rarities: exile newspapers intended for and directed at a female readership. Table of contents: “Exemplary Lives”? Thoughts on Exile, Gender and Exile Writing / Katharina Prager: Gender and Kindertransport Memoirs / Andrea Hammel: Anna Seghers und die Moderne: Positionen aus der Expressionismusdebatte und den großen Exilromanen / Christine Ujma: Masculinity and Femininity in Anna Seghers’ and Bodo Uhse’s Mexican Exile Narratives / Trinidad Marín Villora: Carl und Alice Zuckmayer in Vermont: A Gendered Perspective / Birgit Maier-Katkin: Die Suche nach dem Ort: Veza Canettis Erzählung „Toogoods oder das Licht“ / Rosa Marta Gómez Pato: „Man wird, was man war erst ganz in der Emigration“: Veza und Elias Canetti in der Emigration in England ?
