- Description

- Description
- Originally published in Dutch as '1900: hoogtij van burgerlijke cultuur' (2000). This volume describes the history, cultural patterns and particularities of the Netherlands around the years 1900. It focuses on the rediscovery or reconstruction of the Golden Age, on the Dutch colonial empire in the East Indies and relations with South Africa, on the emancipation of the Roman Catholics after 1853, on the Jewish community in Amsterdam and other cities, and on various Protestant denominations. Attention is paid to the utopian aspects of early socialism and the ideological background of feminism, and to the connection between socialism, mysticism, and symbolic art.

- Description
- In the great age of English garden design, eighteenth-century women working in the “sister arts” of painting, poetry, and landscape gardening adapted the Linnaean system of plant classification and the tradition of the erotic garden to create art with and for other women that celebrated everything from classical friendship to erotic love. In this book Moore reveals how these women artists used flowers, gardens, and landscapes to express their love for other women.Aristocratic diarist Mary Delany built a garden grotto for the exclusive use of herself and the naturalist and collector Margaret Bentinck, Duchess of Portland. Romantic poet Anna Seward, mourning the loss of Honora Sneyd to an unworthy marriage and then death, wrote her beloved’s face and body into her landscape poems. And in 1790s Connecticut, feminist intellectual Sarah Pierce transformed texts and images into a new poetic evocation of intimacy between women both egalitarian and erotic. These women, Moore shows, influenced later works by Emily Dickinson, Georgia O’Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, and Tee Corinne. Moore goes on to trace the legacy of the lesbian sister arts tradition in subsequent art and poetry, including contemporary multimedia work by Kara Walker, Michelene Thomas, Alma Lopez, and Allyson Mitchell. Her book redefines this unstudied sister arts tradition, which becomes visible only when we understand how the works of these women exemplify what she deems “lesbian genres.”

- Description
- The author reads four writers - Lloyd Brown, Frank London Brown, Alice Childress, and Gwendolyn Brooks - and surveys the work of the visual artist Charles White. She traces resonances of leftist ideas and activism in their artistic achievements and follows their balanced critique of the mainstream liberal and conservative political and literary spheres. Her study recounts the targeting of African American as well as white writers during the McCarthy era, reconstructs the events of the 1959 Black Writers' Conference in New York, and argues for the ongoing influence of the Black Popular Front decades after it folded.

- Description
- Of all the images to arise from the Harlem Renaissance, the most thought-provoking were those of the mulatta. For some writers, artists, and filmmakers, these images provided an alternative to the stereotypes of black womanhood and a challenge to the color line. For others, they represented key aspects of modernity and race coding central to the New Negro Movement. Due to the mulatta's frequent ability to pass for white, she represented a variety of contradictory meanings that often transcended racial, class, and gender boundaries. Portraits of the New Negro Woman investigates the visual and literary images of black femininity that occurred between the two world wars. Sherrard-Johnson traces the origins and popularization of these new representations in the art and literature of the Harlem Renaissance and how they became an ambiguous symbol of racial uplift constraining African American womanhood in the early twentieth century.

- Description
- In 1978, feminist author Kate Millett founded an art colony for women in Poughkeepsie, United States, that remained in operation until the beginning of the new millennium. The colony was founded out of a belief that a gender-specific community would provide an environment where women artists could work unencumbered by social stigma. Millett Farm, familiarly referred to as 'The Farm', evolved from incorporating elements of the radical feminist, gay liberation, and avant-garde movements, creating an experimental community devoted to both the production and the discussion of art made by women. .In 2010 Millett invited S.O.J. - Sisters of Jam (Moa and Mikaela Krestesen) to stay with her at The Farm. This was the starting point for this cultural portrait of The Farm as an artist colony, a feminist community, a social experiment and an act of opposition. Contains interviews with past residents and photographs of The Farm. Also with journal entries, texts from the dissertation 'A world we have invented here' and a map of The Farm by Anne B. Keating. This book has been made possible by Swedish art funds and musea.

Ze schreef romans, dagboeken en essays over kunst en camp, porno en politiek, feminisme en homoseksualiteit, faam en stijl, fascisme en communisme. - Description
- Sontag offers considerations of talismanic writers from her own private canon, such as Marina Tsvetaeva, Randall Jarrell, Roland Barthes, Machado de Assis, W.G. Sebald, Borges and Elizabeth Hardwick. She also focuses on film, dance, photography, painting, opera and theatre and explores some of her own commitments: to the work (and activism) of conscience, to the concreteness of historical understanding, and to the vocation of the writer.
