- Description
- This book examines how the internationalist activities and ambitions of American women’s organizations in the years 1945 to 1960 gave way to other concerns. In the emerging Cold War, American women abandoned their relationship with women from other countries in favour of solidarity with American men. Far from being advocates of internationalism, American women had become agents for Americanism. Confronting a propaganda campaign from Soviet-backed women’s organizations, American women tried to export a vision of the American way of life and of women’s proper place within it.

- Description
- This book explores the construction and representation of masculinity in low-budget western movies made from the 1930s to the early 1950s. These films contained some of the mid-twentieth-century’s most familiar names, especially for youngsters: cowboys such as Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, and Red Ryder. The book combines the author’s childhood fascination with this genre with an interdisciplinary scholarly exploration of the films influence on modern views of masculinity. McGillis argues that the masculinity offered by these films is less one-dimensional than it is plural, perhaps contrary to expectations. Their deeply conservative values are edged with transgressive desire, and they construct a male figure who does not fit into binary categories, such as insider/outsider or masculine/feminine. Particularly relevant is the author’s discussion of George W. Bush as a cowboy and how his aspirations to cowboy ideals continue to shape American policy.

- Description
- This history explores the nature of postwar advocacy for women's higher education. Eisenmann illuminates the impact of this advocacy in the postwar era, identifying a link between women's activism during World War II and the women's movement of the late 1960s. Though the postwar period has been portrayed as an era of domestic retreat for women, Eisenmann finds otherwise as she explores areas of institution building and gender awareness. In an era uncomfortable with feminism, this generation advocated individual decision making rather than collective action by professional women, generally conceding their complicated responsibilities as wives and mothers. By redefining our understanding of activism and assessing women's efforts within the context of their milieu, this innovative work reclaims an era often denigrated for its lack of attention to women.

- Description
- This volume examines men’s experiences during the Holocaust. Chapters first focus on the years of genocide: Jewish victims of National Socialism, Nazi soldiers, Catholic priests enlisted in the Wehrmacht, Jewish doctors in the ghettos, men from the Sonderkommando in Auschwitz, and Muselmänner in the camps. The book then moves to the postwar context: German Protestant theologians, Jewish refugees, non-Jewish Austrian men, and Jewish masculinities in the United States.

- Description
- This book examines gender politics during the post-World War II period and the Cold War in the United States and East and West Germany. The authors show how disruptions of older political and social patterns, exposure to new cultures, population shifts, and the rise of consumerism affected gender roles and identities. Comparing all three countries, chapters analyse the ways that gender figured into relations between victor and vanquished and shaped everyday life in both the Western and Soviet blocs. Topics include the gendering of the immediate aftermath of war: the military, politics, and changing masculinities in postwar societies: policies to restore the gender order and foster marriage and family: demobilization and the development of postwar welfare states: and debates over sexuality (gay and straight).

- Description
- The tension between social reform photography and photojournalism is examined through this study of the life and work of German émigré Hansel Mieth (1909-1998), who made an unlikely journey from migrant farm worker to Life photographer. She was the second woman in that role, after Margaret Bourke-White. Unlike her colleagues, Mieth was a working-class reformer with a deep disdain for Life's conservatism and commercialism. In fact, her work often subverted Life's typical representations of women, workers, and minorities. Some of her most compelling photo essays used skillful visual storytelling to offer fresh views on controversial topics: birth control, vivisection, labor unions, and Japanese American internment during the Second World War. Her dual role as reformer and photojournalist made her a desirable commodity at Life in the late 1930s and early 40s, but this role became untenable in Cold War America, when her career was cut short.

- Description
- While much has been written over the years about male blues singers of the first half of the 20th century, little attention has been paid to blueswomen. These women used their songs to proclaim their pain or to speak up and protest unfair conditions and discrimination. Through their songs, they expressed a desire for freedom and equality in a time when women were almost universally subjugated. The 37 women profiled here are representative of the many blueswomen who performed in the United States through the end of World War II. Some are well known (e.g., Lucille Bogan and Sippie Wallace), but many are obscure (such as Lil Johnson, Liza Brown and Margaret Whitmire). Biographical profiles are followed by a sampling of the performers’ lyrics.

- Description
- Using fathers' first-hand accounts from letters, journals, and personal interviews along with hospital records and medical literature, Leavitt offers a new perspective on the changing role of expectant fathers from the 1940s to the 1980s. She shows how, as men moved first from the hospital waiting room to the labor room in the 1960s, and then on to the delivery and birthing rooms in the 1970s and 1980s, they became more involved in the birth experience and their influence over events expanded. With attention to power and privilege, Leavitt charts not only the increasing involvement of fathers, but also medical inequalities, the impact of race and class, and the evolution of hospital policies. The book is illustrated with images from TV, films, and magazines.

- Description
- The author examines what science fiction (SF) invasion films tell about the tensions in the United States at the dawn of the atomic age especially concerning gender roles and expectations. Using a cultural studies approach, she works from the assumption that 'invasion' films with their 'us' versus 'them' nature provide important visual and verbal narratives for American citizens' trying to understand and negotiate the social and political changes that followed the allied victory in World War II. By reading these invasion narratives as performances of middle-class, primarily white Americans' anxieties about social and political issues, the author argues that the narratives often played out as a round in the battle of the sexes.

- This book explores gendered and class-based representations of American women in women's magazine advertisements published during the period surrounding the Second World War. The author examines both the process of creating and the resulting content of wartime mobilization messages found in magazine advertising aimed at American women. The circumstances of the Second World War provide a window where the normally implicit interactions among the social forces which construct class-differentiated gendered expectations for women in society are revealed, recorded, and made accessible for study. During this period government altered the prevailing media representations of women and women's roles in response to widespread labor shortages stemming from the movement of male workers into the armed forces and increased demand for military and consumer goods.

- Into the Vortex challenges and rethinks feminist film theory's reflections on the workings of sound and voice in film. Including close readings of film theorists such as Kaja Silverman and Mary Ann Doane, Britta H. Sjogren offers an alternative to image-centered scenarios that dominate feminist film theory's critique of the representation of sexual difference. Sjogren focuses on a rash of 1940s Hollywood films in which the female voice bears a marked formal presence to demonstrate the ways that the feminine is expressed and difference is sustained. She argues that these films capitalize on particular particular psychoanalytic, narratological and discursive contradictions to bring out and express difference, rather than to contain or close it down. Exploring the vigorous dynamic engendered by contradiction and paradox, Sjogren charts a way out of the pessimistic, monolithic view of patriarchy and cinema's representation of women's voices.

- In this book Purbrick offers an analysis of contemporary domestic consumption. She investigates the ritualized presentation of objects upon marriage, and their subsequent cycles of exchange within the domestic sphere. Focusing on gift-giving in Britain from 1945 to the present, comparative context is provided by material from North America and Europe. .By considering how the specific contexts in which consumption occurs, such as married domesticity, can limit possible versions of selfhood, The Wedding Present tests the assumption that consuming creates individual identities. Thus, the book argues, consumption cannot be isolated as an explanation of individual or social formation. .The publication consists of: Introduction: Making homes and worlds: marriage and consumption from 1945 to today : Objects of approval : China and pyrex: the practices of preservation : Accounting for change: forgotten, neglected and altered objects : The list: domesticity, conformity and class (The gift list): Methods: mass-observation : Afterword: unmarried households.

The approaches of teachers and students were sometimes predictable and other times surprising, yet almost wholly without controversy in the two decades before the so-called Sexual Revolution of the 1960s. This book shows the tensions between and among adults and youth attempting to make sense of sex in a society that was then, as much as today, both sex-phobic and sex-saturated.

- Description
- American GIs in wartime England were instantly attractive to British women - especially in the absence of their fighting men. Some seventy thousand British war brides returned to the United States. In this book Friedman tells how Brithish and American mass media presented this phenomenon. She focuses on media representations of sexuality and marriage in wartime, showing how mass media interpretations turned from public suspicion of war brides to popular acceptance. She considers how the brides saw themselves compared to their media images and shows how the media co-opted brides as symbols of the Anglo-American 'special-friendship', postwar power imbalance, and gendered ideals of marriage and domestication.

- Description
Summary in English. - The diary of Lily Sergueiew (1912-1950) chronicles her months-long journey to becoming a double agent for the British under the code name ‘Treasure’. From the moment she conceived the idea of becoming a double agent, she faced challenges on two fronts: first, she had to convince the Germans to ask her to spy for them, second, she needed the British to believe her story. Only then could she begin the work of helping free her homeland (France) from the German occupier.
