- Description
- During the first days of the Spanish Civil War, women played an integral role in the spontaneous uprising that prevented the immediate success of the Nationalist coup. Around one thousand of these women went on to join the militias who fought at the front. Women’s participation in the anti-fascist resistance constituted one of the greatest mass political mobilizations of women in Spain’s history. By late 1936, attitudes towards women in combat began to change drastically, and by March 1937, the majority of milicianas had been removed from their combat positions. Though there existed a consensus around this issue among the male leadership of both the Republican government and left-wing political groups, female combatants viewed this turn of events differently. The majority of the milicianas saw it as a retreat from the gains women had made during the war and revolution. The political leadership within the Republic presented numerous arguments for why it was necessary to remove women from combat. This book argues that the reason it was considered acceptable for women to fight, and then seen as undesirable eight months later, was connected to the course of the social revolution.

- Description
- Colonial officer from 1813 to 1859, Inspector General James Barry was a pioneering medical reformer who after his death in 1865 became the object of intense speculation when rumours arose about his sex. This cultural history of Barry’s afterlives in Victorian to contemporary life-writing (‘biographilia’) examines strategies of biography, biofiction and biodrama of the last one and a half centuries. In exploring the reconstructions and re-imaginations of the historical personality across time, the book illustrates that the ‘real’ James Barry does not exist, any more than does the ‘faithful’ biographical, biofictional or biodramatic rendering of a life in a generically ‘stable’ and discrete form.

- Description
- This volume contains historical narratives about the contributions of women in the American military, from the American Revolution to the present wars in the Middle East. Based on diaries, letters, oral histories and memoirs, these women reveal why and how they chose to serve their country. For example, Harriet Tubman (1820-1913) tells her experiences as the first American woman to lead an invasion, freeing some 750 slaves. Linda Bray (1960-) tells about her leading of troops into combat during the war in Panama in the 1980s.

- Description
- At least 250 women served-disguised as men-in the ranks of both North and South during the Civil War. After covering the major combat actions in which women served the authors reconstruct the reasons why women entered the armed forces: many were simply patriotic, while others followed their husbands or lovers and yet others yearned to break free from the constraints that Victorian society had laid on them as women.

- Description
- Drawing on a wealth of regimental histories, newspaper archives, and a host of previously unreported accounts, Hall shows that women served in more capacities and in greater number-perhaps several thousand-than has previously been known. They served in the infantry, cavalry, and artillery and as spies, scouts, saboteurs, smugglers, and frontline nurses. From all walks of life, they followed husbands and lovers into battle, often in male disguise that remained undiscovered until they were wounded (or gave birth), and endured the same hardships and dangers as did their male counterparts.

- Description
- This book explores how and why Scottish Highlanders, Punjabi Sikhs, and Nepalese Gurkhas became identified as the British Empire's fiercest, most manly soldiers in nineteenth century discourse. As 'martial races' these men were believed to possess a biological or cultural disposition to the racial and masculine qualities necessary for the arts of war. Because of this, they were used as icons to promote recruitment in British and Indian armies - a phenomenon with important social and political effects in India, in Britain, and in the armies of the Empire.
