- Description
- Popular and academic representations of the free mulatta concubine depict women of mixed black African and white racial descent as defined by their sexual attachment to white men, and thus they offer evidence of the means to and dimensions of their freedom within Atlantic slave societies. In this book the author contends that the uniformity of these representations conceals the figure’s centrality to the practices and production of diaspora. She argues that the concubine figure’s manifestation as both historical subject and African diasporic goddess indicates her centrality to understanding how free and enslaved black subjects performed gender, theorized race and freedom, and produced their own diasporic identities. The book traces the free mulatta concubine across the physical and imaginative landscapes of three Atlantic sites: Gorée Island, New Orleans, and Saint Domingue (Haiti).

- Description
- In this book the fur trade is examined not simply as an economic activity but as a social and cultural complex that continued for nearly two centuries. Marriages of fur traders to Indian women created bonds that helped advance trade relations. As a result there emerged a unique society derived from both Indian and European culture. Gradually mixed-blood women took their positions in fur-trade society as they possesed the ideal qualifications for a fur trader's wife. In a society where marriage defined a woman's position, white women felt threatened by the presence of acculturated native women against whom they might have to compete for husbands. White women emerged as agents of racism seeking to protect their social status. The author pieced together information from extensive collections of traders' journals, letters, and wills, examining historica evidence in the broader context of social relevance.

- Description
- This book gives voice to women mathematicians from the late eighteenth century through to the present day. It documents the complex nature of the conditions women around the world have faced--and continue to face--while pursuing their careers in mathematics. The earlier parts of the book provide historical context and perspective, beginning with excursions into the lives of fifteen women born before 1920. Included are histories of collective efforts to improve women's opportunities in research mathematics. In addition, a photo essay puts a human face on the subject as it illustrates women's contributions in professional associations.. .More than eighty women from academe, government, and the private sector provide a rich mélange of insights and strategies for creating workable career paths while maintaining rewarding personal lives. The book discusses related social and cultural issues, and includes a summary of recent comparative data relating to women and men in mathematics and women from other sciences. First-person accounts provide explicit how-tos: many narratives demonstrate great determination and perseverance. Talented women vividly portray their pleasure in discovering new mathematics. The senior among them speak out candidly, interweaving their mathematics with autobiographical detail. At the beginning of a new century, women at all stages of their careers share their outlooks and experiences.

- The essays in this book of southern history address the experiences of white and non-white women. Among the subjects covered are black women's suffrage: female kin and female slaves in planters' wills: the northern myth of the rebel girl: second wave feminism in the South: and southern lesbians. Bringing to light the lives of Cherokee women, Appalachian 'coal daughters', and Jewish women in the South, the essays ensure that monolithic representations of southern womanhood are a thing of the past.

- Description
- Artist and educator Ria Brodell researched the lives of people worldwide who didn't conform to gender norms, from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. In this book she offers twenty-eight portraits of forgotten individuals who were assigned female at birth but whose gender presentation was more masculine than feminine, who did not want to enter into heterosexual marriage, and who often faced punishments for being themselves. Each portrait is accompanied by a biographical note. The paintings are modeled on Catholic holy cards, this way subverting a religious template.

- Description
- The author researched the history of the debutante ritual, a highly choreographed tribal rite. It begins in England six hundred years ago when wealthy fathers needed an efficient way to find appropriate husbands for their daughters. She traces the social seasons of young women on both sides of the Atlantic (London, Philadelphia, the American South, New York), often through their own words from diaries, letters, and interviews that Richardson conducted at contemporary balls. While exploring why the debutante tradition persists - and spread to Russia, China, and others nations - the author uncovered the cultural influence on the lives of daughters and ideas of women, courtship and marriage.
