- Description
- This book is the history of American women writers from 1650 to 2000. Showalter introduces more than 250 female writers. These include not only famous and expected names (Harriet Beecher Stowe, Willa Cather, Dorothy Parker, Flannery O’Connor, Toni Morrison among them), but also many who were once successful and acclaimed yet now are little known, from the early American best-selling novelist Catherine Sedgwick to the Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Susan Glaspell. Showalter shows how these writers—both the enduring stars and the ones left behind by the canon—were connected to one another and to their times. She believes it is time to fully integrate the contributions of women into the American literary heritage.

- Description
- This book provides an overview of Spanish feminist thought from the eighteenth century to the present. It focuses on six concepts: solitude, personality, social class, work, difference and equality. It compares Spanish feminist theory with that of other countries. The author brings together arguments from different Spanish scholars. The book describes the tension between theorists of each persuasion, a tension that emerged publicly during Spain's democratic era.

- Description

- Description

And Bueskens' interviews ten 'revolving mothers' to reveal how periodic absence, exceeding the standard work-day, disrupts the default position assigned to mothers in the home, and in turn disrupts the gendered dynamics of household work in the 21st century.

- Description
- This volume questions how women from the English-speaking world have negotiated their roles in the spiritual and religious spheres. From early-modern Catholics and Puritan groups to twenty-first century nuns, Anglican ministers and Mormons, how did women define their roles in male-dominated institutions? How did they react to the public perceptions of their bodies as either incompatible with or facilitating access to the divine? The questions at the core of this book hinge upon the articulation between the female self (body and soul) and its experience of the preternatural, of faith, and of institutionalized groups. Are there specific forms of female spirituality and do they lead to a feminized/feminist conception of God?

- Description
- Women's accounts of their journeys, distinct from those of male travelers, began to appear more frequently in the early nineteenth century, and Egypt was a popular destination. Women had more time to watch and describe and they spent time both in the harems of Cairo and with the women they met along the Nile. Some of them, like Sarah Belzoni, Sophia Poole, and Ellen Chennells, spoke Arabic. Others wrote engagingly of their experiences as observers of an exotic culture, with special access to some places no man could ever go. .From Eliza Fay's description of arriving in Egypt in 1779 to Rosemary Mahoney's daring trip down the Nile in a rowboat in 2006, this lively collection of writing by over forty women travelers includes Lady Evelyn Cobbold, Isabella Bird, Winifred Blackman, Norma Lorimer, Harriet Martineau, Florence Nightingale, Amelia Edwards, and Lucie Duff Gordon.

- The essays in this collection explore new perspectives on the histories of bodies and sexualities, but also on issues that are allready the subject of major historiographical debates. The author emphasizes the historical distinctiveness of ideas about bodies, sex and desires and demonstrates the notable continuities that have existed over time. The essays draw attention to how ideas about sexuality, bodies and desires can be traced back through older knowledge and thinking.

- Description
- This book traces sex and desire in Muslim cultures through a collection of chapters that span the 9th to 21st centuries. The first part of the book examines how people constructed, discussed and challenged sexual norms from the Abbasid to the Ottoman period. The second part looks at literary and cinematic Arab cultural production as a site for the construction and transgression of gender norms. The third part builds on feminist historiography and social anthropology to question simplistic dichotomies and binaries.

- Description
- The author researched the history of the debutante ritual, a highly choreographed tribal rite. It begins in England six hundred years ago when wealthy fathers needed an efficient way to find appropriate husbands for their daughters. She traces the social seasons of young women on both sides of the Atlantic (London, Philadelphia, the American South, New York), often through their own words from diaries, letters, and interviews that Richardson conducted at contemporary balls. While exploring why the debutante tradition persists - and spread to Russia, China, and others nations - the author uncovered the cultural influence on the lives of daughters and ideas of women, courtship and marriage.

- Description
