- Description
- In the 1890s the social and moral landscape of San Fransico were defined by sexual leisure and gender experimentation. The white middle class writings drawed upon subjects such as masculine women and extramarital sexual contacts by Chinese and Japanese immigrants in particular. By using newspapers, crime files and oral histories, the author analyses how this sexual fulfillment led to racial stereotyping. White reporters, writers and artists would blend the Chinese and Japanese into one race. Hence one Asian-American stereotype emerged, weighted with sexual and gender meaning. Sueyoshi bridges feminist, queer and ethnic studies to show how the search to forge new boundaries in gender and sexual freedom reinforced racial inequality in the American city.

- Description
- The focus in this volume is on Dutch racism with revelations of illuminating insight in the two closely related questions that organize this volume: what factors contribute to the complexity of Dutch racism and why is the concept of racism so intensely contested? One of the key features of Dutch racism is its denial. The tendency to reject colonial history as relevant for understanding contemporary sexually offensive representations of black women is not new. The volume is divided into three chapters: 1. Narratives and legacies of Dutch Racism 2. Bladk bodies, white fantasms 3.Normalizing racism, resisting humiliations 4. Dutch situations: reflections from visitors and other keen observers With among others the following articles: - Diving into the wreck: exploring intersections of sexuality, 'race', gender, and class in the Dutch cultural archive / Gloria Wekker - Harmless identities: representations of racial consciousness amog three generations Indo-Europeans / Esther Captain - The enuncation of the nation: notes on colonial refractions in the Netherlands / Joseph D. De terreinen die voor de analyse van de culturele component in het onderzoek betrokken zijn: de alledaagse omgang, het minderhedenbeleid, de sociale wetenschappen, de volwasseneneducatie.

The authors employ a number of different theoretical and empirical approaches to identify the cognitive and motivational influences on the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and intergroup processes that lead to racism. - Description
- The wearing of the Islamic veil by Muslim women has become a source of tensions in Western European countries. In order to investigate majoritymembers’ attitudes towards the veil in Belgium, the focus is on the role of subtle prejudice/racism on the host society’s attitudes towards immigrants, (b) the role of values on acculturation, and (c) the role of religious attitudes on prejudice. Results revealed the effects of subtle prejudice/racism, values (self-enhancement values and security versus universalism), and religious attitudes (literal anti-religious thinking versus spirituality), in predicting greater levels of anti-veil attitudes beyond the effects of other related variables such as age and political conservatism. The studies also suggest the importance of including religious attitudes as part of the intergroup-relation factors that predict attitudes towards immigrants, at least with regard to specific components of intercultural relations.

- Description
- In the 1990s, several European filmmakers addressed the Romeo and Juliet motif of 'impossible love' in the context of multiculturalism. A heterosexual love affair between people of different ethnic backgrounds allows filmmakers to address issues of racism and deconstruct racial stereotypes. In the films discussed in this article, the tragic love affairs point to the unwillingness of European countries to become pluralistic and multiethnic societies. Some films have attempted to represent interethnic love relations more hopefully, celebrating happy endings of mixed race couples. The success of such films may indicate that the genre of comedy has won over the tragedy of the Romeo and Juliet topos in cinematic representations of interethnic love relations. Perhaps European cinema is ready to embrace constructions of European identity as hybrid, diverse and multiple.
