- Description
- This report analyzes data for all 50 states and the District of Columbia across six topical areas that affect women’s lives: political participation, employment and earnings, work and family, poverty and opportunity, health and well-being, and violence and safety. Within each of these areas, various indicators of well-being are explored. While the focus of the report is on the status of Black women, comparisons between Black women and other racial and ethnic groups of women (and men) are presented to contextualize the data. Basic demographic data for each state are also provided. The report concludes with recommendations to improve the status of Black women in the United States.

- This book deals with the masculine normativity and the identity of black transgender women. It addresses 1) the implications of being a black transgender woman within the black community and the American society, 2) the societal and cultural impact of the black-male-to-black-female transition on black masculinity and femininity, and 3) the effects of toxic masculinity within the black community leading to violence against black transgender women. Finally, the book calls for more acceptance and inclusiveness of different sexualities and gender identities.

- The author elucidates racial politics and racial subjugation, especially in their gendered and queer psychosexual dynamics. Explicating in detail two imprinting episodes in American racial history -lynching and prison rape- Pinar argues that the gender of racial politics and violence in America is in some sense queer. He pays attention to the Klu Klux Klan, the N.A.A.C.P., men and women and racial politics and women's movements.

- Description
- Judith Butler follows Edward Said's late suggestion that through a consideration of Palestinian dispossession in relation to Jewish diasporic traditions a new ethos can be forged for a one-state solution. Butler engages Jewish philosophical positions to articulate a critique of political Zionism and its practices of illegitimate state violence, nationalism, and state-sponsored racism. At the same time, she moves beyond communitarian frameworks, including Jewish ones, that fail to arrive at a radical democratic notion of political cohabitation. In her view, it is as important to dispute Israel's claim to represent the Jewish people as it is to show that a narrowly Jewish framework cannot suffice as a basis for an ultimate critique of Zionism. She promotes an ethical position in which the obligations of cohabitation do not derive from cultural sameness but from the unchosen character of social plurality.

- This book explores the use of Twitter as a communication platform by marginalized groups. It shows how groups such as Afro-Americans, women and transgender people, who were long excluded from elite media spaces, use Twitter hashtags to advocate, mobilize, and communicate. The authors describe how hashtags including #MeToo and #SurvivorPrivilege challenged the conventional understanding of gendered violence. They examine the voices and stories of black feminism enabled by #FastTailedGirls and #SayHerName and explore the use of #GirlsLikeUs, a network of transgender women. The authors also investigate the digital signatures of the “new civil rights movement”, that set the stage for #BlackLivesMatter.

- The main purpose of this book is to revisit prevailing conceptions of the Japanese state—which tend to focus on bureaucratic dominance, party politics, and interest groups—and argue that these institutions cannot explain the extensive legal and political changes concerning women's and children's human rights since the late 1990s. Instead, the author advances a constructivist approach to examine the impact of global human rights norms on Japan. This approach is exceptional in linking gender, children, and minority rights to Japanese norms.

- In this book Hill applies a gender lens to the multiple systems of oppression that have shaped the lives of African American women and men. She challenges the image of a monolithic black population, a legacy of the civil rights movement that she argues is impossible to sustain in the postmodern era. Hill examines the ways in which gender has affected experiences of intimacy, family relationships, child-rearing, and motherhood for contemporary African Americans. Drawing on ethnographic material, interviews, and scholarly research, her work rethinks the cultural and historical definitions of black identity and reconceptualises the various forms of oppression faced by black women.

- Description
- Probably no period in American history is as controversial, as distorted by myth and as 'essentially unknown' as the era of emancipation and Reconstruction Foner argues in this book. His analysis of that era, its successes and failures, and its long-term consequences up until this very day addresses the debates among historians, corrects the misrepresentations and separates myth from fact with persuasive data. Foner opens his work with an overview of slavery and the Civil War and concludes with a consideration of the Civil Rights movement and the continuing impact of Reconstruction upon the current political scene, a framework that adds to the clarity of his history of that era, its aftermath and its legacy. Joshua Brown's six interspersed 'visual essays,' with his fresh commentary on images from slavery through Reconstruction to Jim Crow, buttress Foner's text and contribute to its accessibility. In his mission to illuminate Reconstruction's critical repercussions for contemporary American culture, Foner balances his passion for racial equality and social justice with disciplined scholarship.

- 'An increasing majority of refugees live in cities and they face gender-based violence risks as a result of unmet needs and intersecting oppressions based on gender, race, sexual orientation, and disability among others. .A deeper understanding of the nuances and complexities of urban risks is essential to addressing violence and bridging the protection gaps affecting marginalized groups who have been traditionally overlooked in humanitarian response. Protecting refugees with heightened risks – women, adolescent girls, LGBTI individuals, persons with disabilities, sex workers and male survivors of sexual violence – requires innovative, tailored programming and outreach. This new reality necessitates a monumental shift in humanitarian response, requiring policy makers, donors, and practitioners to develop new programming that addresses the protection concerns of refugees in urban contexts in Quito, Ecuador: Beirut, Lebanon: Kampala, Uganda: and Delhi and India.'

- During the 1890's a series of lynchings in America received international media attention. Hence the African American journalist and civil rights activist Ida B. Wells travelled to England to cultivate British moral indignation against American lynching. She adapted race and gender roles from African American abolitionists in Britain to legitimate her activism as 'black lady reformer'. This book explores the antilynching campaigns of Wells in 1893-1994 and her influence on altering the framework of public debates on lynching in both Britain and the US.

- This book examines how South Asian women’s collective agency is operationalized through civic organizations in the UK. The historically racialized image of the South Asian woman as lacking in political agency is challenged through their long history of activism on the Indian subcontinent. The creation of 'critical spaces' by South Asian women in the diaspora places them as active agents who have successfully influenced social policy on important issues such as forced marriage, domestic violence and sexuality. The engagement with empirical data demonstrates the significance and impact of race, racism, sexism and religion on the lives of the women.

- Description
- Detective fiction featuring white women and people of colour, such as Barbara Neely's Blanche White and Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins, has become tremendously popular. Although they are considered 'light reading', mysteries also hold important cultural and social 'clues'. Race is both a cultural fiction and a central organizing principle of experience. Reddy explores the ways in which crime fiction manipulates cultural constructions such as race and gender to inscribe dominant cultural discourses. She notes that even those writers who appear to set out to revise outdated conventions repeatedly reproduce the genre's most conservative elements. Reddy states that the greatest obstacle to transforming fiction, is the fact that the genre itself is deeply embedded in the discourse of white (and male) superiority.
