- Description
- For their wit, intelligence, good looks, and politics, the aristocratic Mitford sisters were the toast of the mid-twentieth century. They were prodigious correspondents, particularly between each other. Mosley, daughter-in-law of Diana Mitford, has selected and excerpted from some 12,000 letters between the sisters over a period of almost 80 years. As friends and confidantes of noted figures of their time, from royals to statesmen to artists, the sisters drop prominent names offhandedly. Notable for their humor and compassion, these letters reveal Nancy's sharp tongue: Pamela's love of the land (but not of children): Diana's lifelong devotion to her fascist husband, Sir Oswald Mosley: Unity's infatuation with Hitler: and Deborah's role as peacemaker. Jessica scandalized her family by running away with her Communist cousin.

- Description
- What is the relationship between sexual and other kinds of politics? Few societies have posed this puzzle as urgently, or as disturbingly, as Nazi Germany. What exactly were Nazism's sexual politics? Were they repressive for everyone, or were some individuals and groups given sexual license while others were persecuted, tormented, and killed? How do we make sense of the evolution of postwar interpretations of Nazism's sexual politics? What do we make of the fact that scholars from the 1960s to the present have routinely asserted that the Third Reich was 'sex-hostile'

Moreover, he explores Graham's relationship with dancer and choreographer Erick Hawkins.

- Description
- Modernity tends to privilege masculine-connoted characteristics and has generated a conceptualization of human subjectivity emphasizing these qualities. Yet the costs of this conception of human selfhood are high, and at modernity's most acute moments of historical crisis, writers and artists can be seen turning to feminine-connoted figurations -- nature, tradition, myth and spirituality, intuition, relationality, flux. Feminist critiqueshave viewed cultural history as male-generated and 'phallocentric,' in need of a feminine corrective. The innovation of this book is to examine these two gendered perspectives side by side, investigating the culturally symbolic significance of gender in post 1945 German language literature via a sequence of paired readings of major, thematically related texts by male and female authors, Ingeborg Bachmann and Max Frisch and Christa Wolf, Elfriede Jelinek and Rainald Goetz: and Heiner and Christa Wolf.

- Description
- The essays in this collection examine issues such as identity and ideology which are at play in the female autobiography practice. The women writers analyzed here through mainly historical, literary, feminist and psychoanalytic lenses cover a long period in the history of Italy, spanning from the Fascist era to our time. The first part of the book includes authors interacting primarily with political ideology in a way that eventually entails the challenge of the official 'technologies of gender' (De Lauretis, 1987) and implicitly, a reflection on the gendered identity. In the second part, 'Reconsidering ideology, negotiating autobiography,' while the political ideology is not completely excluded, it becomes however something more internalized and relevant to the writers quest for identity. Such process bears consequences with respect to the canon of autobiography, as authors experiment with new forms of autobiographical narratives and readers become more and more an integral component of this personal endeavor.

- Description
- This book is the untold story of the dawn of the sexual revolution in America -- an illuminating, startling, at times bizarre story of sex and science, ecstasy and repression. In the middle of the 20th century, the United States became an adoptive home for dozens of expatriated European thinkers, who saw the country ripe for sexual liberation. One of the most left-field of them was the Viennese psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich, a disciple of Freud's who had broken with the master. After World War Two, Reich's theories caught on among writers and artists, the early adopters of the counter-culture. Norman Mailer and Saul Bellow were amongst those for whom the theories represented a yearned-for synthesis of sexual and political liberation, and of physical science and psychology. Meanwhile, Reich himself faced one debacle after another. Albert Einstein heard him out before rebuffing him. The FBI investigated him as a Communist sympathizer: it turned out that they were hunting the wrong man.. There were claims of sexual misdeeds, and bouts of Reich's own mental instability. This is the story of the blossoming of the 20th century's sexual revolution, and the unshackling of a repressed society, and sex before science.

- Description
- Surrealist Masculinities offers an exploration of how surrealist visual production was shaped by constructions of gender and sexuality, particularly masculinity, in the 1920s and early 1930s. Amy Lyford builds on feminist critical approaches to surrealism, which have viewed the female body in surrealism as symptomatic of male misogyny: yet she also departs from such work by arguing that representations of an anxious, ambivalent, or perverse masculinity were integral to the movement's critique of France's 'return to order' in the years following World War I. This book analyzes surrealist work in relation to the history of surrealism and investigates how surrealist artists and writers appropriated contemporary medical science, advertising, and sexology in their quest to undermine the status quo.

- This book offers diverse perspectives on Italian women’s participation in war and conflict throughout Italy’s modern history. The book focuses on heroines who fought for Italy’s Unification. It considers exceptional individuals, such as Eva Kühn Amendola, who combatted both with her body and her pen, as well as collective female efforts during the world wars, whether military or civilian. In part three, where the context is twentieth-century society, the focus shifts to those women engaged in less conventional conflicts who resorted to different forms of revolt, including active non-violence

- This book analyses the invisibility of actions, background, connections and trials of Hungarian female perpetrators in the Second World War. It examines why and how far-right women were made 'invisible' by their fellow Arrow Cross Party members. The author argues that the legacy of these women remained alive throughout the years of state socialism and contributed to the recent revolt of far-right politics in Hungary.

WIZO was founded by Rebecca Sieff, Vera Weizman and Edith Eder in 1920 in London during the founding conference of World WIZO. The delegates of this conference from all over the world wanted an organization in order to advance the welfare of women and children in Palestine and to carry out specific tasks in the rebuilding of Palestine.
