- Description
- Within the gender studies binaries like female versus male and gay versus straight have been problematized as a symbol of the stigmatization and erasure of non-normative subjects and practices. This volume offers different perspectives on both these binaries and other dichotomies that penetrate the gendered and sexual lives of speakers. Several chapters focus on the limiting or misleading qualities of analyses of binaries, while others suggest that binaries are a crucial component of social meaning within particular communities of study. The book advocates for a re-theorization of the binary that provides more complex and contextually-grounded engagement with speakers' own orientations to dichotomous systems. Finally, it is argued that researchers must be careful to avoid the assumption that our own preconceptions about binary social structures will be shared by the communities we study.

- Description
- This collection of essays takes up the most famous feminist sentence ever written, Simone de Beauvoir's 'On ne naît pas femme: on le devient,', in the book The Second Sex, finding in it a flashpoint that galvanizes feminist thinking and action in multiple dimensions. Two controversies emerge in the life of this sentence: a controversy over the practice of translation and a controversy over the nature and status of sexual difference.

- Description
- This book provides a wide variety of examples of how feminist theory can inform the study and practice of translation. Looking at such diverse topics as North American chick lit and medieval Arabic, the book explores women in translation in many contexts, whether they are women translators, women authors, or women characters. Together the contributors show that feminist theory can apply to translation in many new and unexplored ways and that it deserves the full attention of the discipline that helped it become internationally influential. Woith articles about Adrienne Rich, Simone de beauvoir, Ulrike Meinhof, Emily Dickinson and more
