- Although Augusta Webster wrote numerous nature poems that follow a more conventional trajectory, the four poems investigated in this essay illustrate difference by pointing to the unique aspects of women’s experience and allowing the oppression of conventional Victorian women to stand apart from the workings of nature.

- Description
- Countess Fanny de Beauharnais (1737–1813) was among the first to distinguish herself as both a socialite and a prolific author. She did not see her writing practice as a pastime, but as a significant part of her social identity, which influenced her vision of women’s role in high society and the stakes associated with attendance at her salon. To understand the specificity of that position, the author analyzes the relationships between the countess and a group of poètes légers (light poets), headed by Claude-Joseph Dorat (1734–1780), who frequented her salon from about 1770 to 1780. De Beauharnais’s circle operated on symbolic trade: in return for the countess’s support, the school of Dorat helped construct her image as author.

- Description
- In this article the author will focus on May Kendall and the evolutionary poetry that she published in Punch magazine and the “Science” section of her 1887 collection Dreams to Sell. Focusing particularly on Kendall’s responses to the science of craniology and her depictions of evolution’s blurring of boundaries between seemingly distinct groups, Birch argues that Kendall displaces debates about gender and brain size onto other species and presents a reading of evolution that is implicitly anti-hierarchical and that undermines rigid categories.
