Due to drastic reforms of the American welfare program in the nineties thousands of poor single mothers have entered the workforce. Results from a longitudinal study suggest that mothers' transitions off welfare and into employment are not associated with negative outcomes for children between the ages 2 to 4 years and the ages ten to 14 years. A slight evidence occured that mothers' entry into the workforce was related to improvements in adolescents' mental health.
