Op het landgoed ontving het echtpaar gasten uit de wereld van de kunst, architectuur, literatuur, wetenschap en politiek. De uitgave bevat een biografie van Henriette Roland Holst, en van haar echtgenoot. Tevens een bespreking van de dichtbundel 'De vrouw in het woud', het toneelstuk 'Thomas More' en de biografie van Rousseau (uitgaven 1912) uit haar oeuvre. Daarnaast speciale aandacht voor de gasten van de Buissche Heide, genoemd in het gastenboek oftewel 'Het boek van de Buissche Heide'. Dit document vormt het uitgangspunt voor deze publicatie en de begeleidende tentoonstelling 'Henriette & Richard Roland Holst - Het boek van de Buissche Heide', van 4 maart 2012 tot en met 3 maart 2013, in het Vincent van Gogh Huis te Zundert.

- The authors, the American writer Lisa Alther (1944) and the french artist Françoise Gilot (1921), have been friends for more than twenty-five years. In this book is published their extended conversation in which they talk about everything important to them: their childhoods, the impact of war on their lives and their work, and their views on love, style, self-invention, feminism, and child rearing. They also discuss the creative impulse and the importance of art as they ponder what it means to be a woman.
