Na het Sandinista-tijdperk kwam Violeta Chamorro in 1990 aan de macht in Nicaragua. Onderzocht wordt hoe het post-socialistische, neoliberale overheidsbeleid van Chamorro invloed heeft op de sociaal-economische omstandigheden van vrouwen en ontwikkelingen in de vrouwenbeweging. De auteur bekijkt m.n. hoe algemeen economisch beleid voor nationale ontwikkeling, dat niet seksistisch is bedoeld, toch negatief uitwerkt voor vrouwen. Ze kijkt verder naar gender in de ontwikkeling van de invloed van staat en politieke participatie.
