This essay researches the musical training of male and female students at the Amsterdamsch Conservatorium at the end of the nineteenth century. This institution officially educated both sexes to the level of professional musicians, but did women have the same musical education and identical job opportunities to men after finishing their education? Firstly, the institutionalisation of Dutch musical society is examined. The foundation of the Amsterdamsch Conservatorium will be described, on the basis of its official regulations, annual reports and contemporaneous articles in journals.
