- Originally published in Dutch as '1900: hoogtij van burgerlijke cultuur' (2000). This volume describes the history, cultural patterns and particularities of the Netherlands around the years 1900. It focuses on the rediscovery or reconstruction of the Golden Age, on the Dutch colonial empire in the East Indies and relations with South Africa, on the emancipation of the Roman Catholics after 1853, on the Jewish community in Amsterdam and other cities, and on various Protestant denominations. Attention is paid to the utopian aspects of early socialism and the ideological background of feminism, and to the connection between socialism, mysticism, and symbolic art.

- Description
- Dwelling in the archive examines how women wrote about the experience of colonialism, partition, and nation-building in memoirs, fictions, and histories. Burton analyses the writings of Janaki Majumdar, daughter of the first president of the Indian National Congress who chronicled her family's transnational history: Cornelia Sorabji, a lawyer who wrote about secluded women in the home: and Attia Hosain, a novelist who wrote about the trauma of partition through a young girl's understandings of her family home. Burton argues for the expansion of what is considered archival material, showing how political events in modern India are closely intertwined with women's experiences of the physical spaces of houses and memories of home.

- Description
- Cannibal Fictions brings together two periods in U.S. history: the years between the Civil War and World War I and the post-Vietnam era, when the nation was beginning to seriously question its own global agenda. Berglund shows how P. T. Barnum, in a traveling exhibit featuring so-called 'Fiji cannibals,' served up an alien 'other' for popular consumption, while Edgar Rice Burroughs in his Tarzan of the Apes series tapped into similar anxieties about the eruption of foreign elements into a homogeneous culture. Turning to the last decades of the twentieth century, Berglund considers how treatments of cannibalism variously perpetuated or subverted racist, sexist, and homophobic ideologies rooted in earlier times. Fannie Flagg's novel Fried Green Tomatoes invokes cannibalism to new effect, offering an explicit critique of racial, gender, and sexual politics (an element to a large extent suppressed in the movie adaptation). Recurring motifs in writing by contemporary American Indian authors Gerald Vizenor, Anna Lee Walters, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Sherman Alexie suggest how Western expansion has, cannibalistically, laid the seeds of its own destruction.

- Nya interprets the philosophy of Simone de Beauvoir through the perspective of French colonial history. She considers Beauvoir through this lens to critique her position as a colonizer woman or colon and as a means of situating her in one of France’s most fraught historical moments. She emphasizes the weight of French colonialism on Beauvoir’s identity as a white French woman, as well as the subjective and interpersonal dialectic of colonialism. The book presents a gendered and female perspective of French colonialism between 1946 and 1962, a time when French intellectuals such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Franz Fanon rallied against the political system, and which ultimately brought about an end to French colonialism. It adheres to a reading of Beauvoir as foremost an intellectual woman, one who reflected upon the legacy of French colonialism as an author and whose nation-bound status as a colonizer played a role in the alliance she created with Gisele Halimi and Djamila Boupacha.

- Description
- The last century has witnessed an upsurge in literature triggered by the feminist movement. This unprecedented event has transformed the various literary genres that are being deconstructed to suit the changing times. African literature has not been spared by the universalized world order. The paper attempts a re-analysis of gender inequality from the pre-colonial to post-colonial period from the lenses of literary narratives. Male writers like Chinua Achebe, Elechi Amadi, Wole Soyinka, Ngugi Wa Thiongo, and Cyprain Ekwensi in their literary mass are accused of condoning patriarchy, are deeply entrenched in a macho conviviality and a one dimensional and minimalised presentation of women who are demoted and assume peripheral roles. Their penchant to portray an androcentric narrative is at variance with the female gender that are trivialized through practices like patriarchy, tradition, culture, gender socialization process, marriage and domestic enslavement. The paper concludes with some contemporary showcases and meta-narratives by both male and female writers like Buchi Emecheta, Mariama Bâ, Ama Ata Aidoo, Flora Nwapa, Sembene Ousmane and Leopold Sedar Senghor who attempt to bridge the gender rifts in the African literary landscape.

- Description
- In this chapter Berteke Waaldijk discusses the portraits of two young women authors, Anne Frank (1929-1944) and Raden Ajeng Kartini (1879-1904). The two portraits have been reproduced in books that published posthumous texts, respectively a diary and personal letters, written by these two women. Both women have acquired canonised status in the representations of two major events of a century, the 20th, that left its mark on the history of the Netherlands: the history of imperialism and the history of the Holocaust. The author argues that reprinting the photographs of these two women contributed to a view of their work in which there was hardly any attention to their literary and political ambitions or the complexities of their writing.
