Focusing on works by Angela Carter, Hélène Cixous, Valerie Martin,m Jean Rhys, and Christa Wolf, this dissertation examines how women writers employ rewriting, through the twin strategies of substitution and supplementaion, to counter silence, exclusion, and misrepresentation, inscribing themselves in the tradition while transforming that tradition.
