- Description

- Description
- This book examines economic transfers across generations and genders from a European perspective. It addresses challenges that societies face in regards to ageing, welfare sustainability, and intergenerational and gender equity. It also offers insights into an often invisible side of the economy, namely the contribution of women who because of the gender contract largely engage in unpaid work in the household. .The book presents an analysis of resource reallocation across population members in Italy, which encompasses the age and the gender perspective, the public and the private sector, and the market and non-market dimensions of the Italian economy. This case study presents information on how intergenerational obligations are split between the family and the state. .The author also explores the possible economic consequences of future ageing by using demographic projections and estimated age profiles of production and consumption. By incorporating services originating from unpaid work in its analysis, this monograph corrects the traditional under-evaluation of the ways homemakers contribute to the economy and offers an addition to studies on generational economy, the National Transfer Accounts (NTA) project in particular. The methods presented, though using data specific to Italy, are relevant for all European countries.

- Description
- This book connects the 19th- and 20th-century migrations in global transcultural perspective. It emphasizes macro-regional internal interactions between and within macro-regions. The essays look at migrant workers experiences in constraining frames and the options they seize or constraints they circumvent. It traces the development from 19th-century proletarian migrations to industries and plantations across the globe to 20th- and 21st-century domestics and caregiver migrations. It integrates male and female migration and shows how women have always been present in mass migrations.

- Description
- Once an occupation traditionally associated with poor rural women who migrated to cities in search of work, paid domestic work is now a transnational occupational niche for millions of women from Asia's less well-off countries-including the Philippines, Indonesia, Burma, Sri Lanka, and India-who embark on sojourns to the richer countries of the world-such as Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada, the Middle East and parts of Europe-in search of a more lucrative livelihood and promising futures for their families and themselves. .Transnational domestic workers are important contributors to the economies of the countries that receive them and also to their own countries through the growing volume of money sent home. Despite their crucial role in the global economy, transnational domestic workers, mostly female, continue to migrate and work under unfavorable conditions and remain highly vulnerable to exploitation. .This volume is an attempt to enhance not only academic research on transnational domestic workers, but also the ability of governments, NGOs and civil society groups-especially in sending and receiving countries-to derive appropriate policies and make recommendations to address the problems directly confronted by Asian transnational domestic workers.

- Description
- Gender analysis remains central to understanding social life, yet focusing on gender alone is inadequate. Recent feminist sociological scholarship highlights how gender intersects with other systems of privilege and oppression. In this book five themes are carried forward throughout the text: the social construction of gender differences: gendered inequalities: intersections of gender with other systems of privilege and oppression: a relational global perspective: and the necessity of working toward social justice.

- Description
- This paper seeks to contribute to a better understanding of macroeconomic policies that benefit women by analysing the links between reform, gender equality, economic development and women’s welfare as they played out in Viet Nam during the 1990s, when the government carried out far-reaching and comprehensive reforms. It employs descriptive, narrative and quantitative approaches to explain how macroeconomic and market liberalization policies, although gender-neutral in intent, can give rise to gendered outcomes as a result of various underlying and interrelated factors. These include social attitudes and conventions influenced by patriarchal values, the pattern and structure of occupational segregation and related gender wage differentials, gender differences in education levels, and labour regulations that have the effect of increasing productivity differences between men and women.

- Description
- This study examines the relationship between social inequality and change in the newly democratic South Africa through the lens of paid domestic labor. The complexities of this institution provide an in-depth analysis of the tension between the race and gender priorities of South Africa's democracy and the lived realities of the majority of its population. Because paid domestic work remains the largest sector of employment for women in South Africa, it is critical to situating the scope of social change in this emergent democracy. This book presents a study of paid domestic labor since South Africa's 1994 post-apartheid transition. Drawing upon 85 interviews with domestic workers, employers, Parliamentarians, community activists and organizational leaders, this research offers diverse perspectives on the race, class and gender divides that remain integral to social relations in the context of national transition. The thesis deals with the effectiveness and the capability of microfinance institutions (MFIs) to enhance women's livelihoods and empowerment and to mitigate the effects of HIV and AIDS in Côte d'Ivoire. The objective of this study is to gain insight into women's needs in terms of support for economic activities and empowerment in rural areas and the way in which MFIs address these needs. The study aims at assessing whether microfinance services provided for women fit their needs in terms of improving their income, productivity, decision-making power, human and social capital.

- Description
- After the Vietnam War, socialist governments ascended to power in all the countries of the former Indochina. In Laos, more than a decade of socialist reorganization was followed by economic liberalization in the late 1980s. Laotian women had traditionally sustained the household and local economy with their work in field, forest, and family, but political and economic changes markedly affected the context of rural women’s prevailing sources of power and subordination. What has happened to women’s traditional sources of control over their own and others’ activities since the 1975 socialist revolution? Have their traditional sources of power or autonomy expanded or contracted as changing conditions have allowed other groups to appropriate women’s traditional resources and roles? Have the dramatic changes had different effects on rural women of differing ethnic backgrounds and varying economic means? Focusing on women from three major ethnic groups—the lowland Lao, the Khmu, and the Hmong—Ireson examines the different ways they have responded to political and economic changes. She shows us that the Laotian experience reveals in microcosm the processes of change toward specialization and integration of women’s work into national and global economies and explains how this shift deeply affects women’s lives
