- Description
- Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle (1624?–1674), was the first woman to publish her own natural philosophy. She challenged the new science and ridiculed the mission of the Royal Society. In this volume, the author combines close readings of Cavendish's writings with discussion on her thought in the broader context of scientific revolution. She explores the fantastic and gendered elements of Cavendish’s natural philosophy. Cavendish integrated imaginative speculation and physical science. She embraced an epistemology that favored contemplation and intuition over logic and empiricism.
