- Description
- While previous studies explored challenges concerning the gendered culture within higher education, less is known about the additional barriers faced by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering en Mathematics) women with children. This study examines the influence motherhood has on STEM womenÔÇÖs perceptions of organisational support, mentoring and networking. Women with children are found to have less opportunity to engage with mentoring or to benefit from formal or informal networks within the institution. The authors suggest review of HR policy and practice to facilitate greater organisational support.

- Description
- This paper seeks to understand how care policies are shaped. It looks at the dynamic between how constituencies make care claims and the ways in which care policies are constructed and delivered in different national, regional and historical contexts. The focus is mainly on child care policies for working parents in Europe, but the purview also includes policies for disabled people and unpaid careers. There are two main sections to the paper. The first focuses on the ways different political actors frame care policies in Europe. The second part examines policies in national context in relation to which issues drive policies and what this means for outcomes in terms of social inequalities: demographic change, social investment, employment-creation, and the global nature of care policy.

- 'In this final policy package a wide range of experts from civil society, policy, research and employers develop a much deeper understanding for the challenges in reconciling work and family life and to showcase different practices, which were used as inspiration for drawing up concrete policy recommendations. In the last few years, there has been a growing demand for policies that support the achievement of the targets on gender equality, closing the gender and pension pay gap, women’s participation in decision making, the Barcelona targets for early childhood education and care, and a better reconciliation between work and family life. In the context of the EU 2020 Strategy, whilst not framed as a headline target, reconciliation measures have nevertheless been recognised at EU level as important means of achieving major policy objectives.'

- Description
- The objective of this paper is to give an updated overview of the different situations of men and women in the labour market. It examines what the contribution of the Structural and Investment Funds – and especially the ESF – can be, in terms of both female employment and work life balance initiatives. The report concludes with some recommendations on how current and future European funds can better support female employment and gender equality through fighting gender stereotypes and gender segregation, changing the prevalent working culture, providing high-quality and affordable care solutions, and supporting women in specific situations such as victims of domestic violence.f

- Description
- In her paper Jane Cattien takes postmodern and intersectional critiques of feminist standpoint theory as a critical point of departure to re-examine the debate around the relevance of the signifier “women” in feminist epistemology. Her aim is twofold: first, she seeks to shed new light on these criticisms by using the lived experiences of mixedrace women as an innovative lens through which to examine the issue of fragmentation in feminist epistemology. Eleanor Dobson examines the relationship between mummy fiction and the fairy-tale genre in the closing years of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth. Isabella Luta investigates the significance behind this change and explore how myth influenced medicine to tackle the question of why ‘Nymphomania’ became the preferred term for excessive female sexuality in the 19th century. A substantial amount of literature dealing with conceptualisations of the nation has neglected the importance that gender and the politics of reproduction play in the construction of national identities. Analysing images of political campaigns and activists as well as public discourses on motherhood, abortion and childcare, Yvonne Frankfurth will illustrate the importance that gender and sexuality assumed in German nation-building projects before and after its unification in 1990. In her paper Kelly Yin Nga Tse critically examines post/feminist imperatives in relation to neoliberal ethos and class dynamics in The People’s Republic of Desire by transnational Chinese women writer, Annie Wang. While what comprises “feminist research methods” is subject to debate, research with a feminist orientation is often characterised by heightened reflexivity and a recognition of the subjective nature of knowledge claims. By drawing upon ethnographic research conducted among young people in post-apartheid South Africa, Fawzia Haeri Mazanderani interrogates the potential value of audio recordings or “voice notes” during fieldwork, in conjunction with the more traditional form of the fieldwork diary.

- Description
- This paper shows that gender inequalities in care provision remain strong. Conclusion is that Japan has never really been a welfare state and Japanese people thus have low expectations of what the state can provide. Care needs have traditionally been met within the family. However, demographic changes, changes in family structures and in the labour market have recently made it necessary to expand the public role in care provision. An important outcome of this situation is the Long-Term Care Insurance, introduced in 2000. Concluding analysis is that the voice of caregivers and those receiving care are missing in the development of care policies. This, according to the author, is in line with other bureaucracy-driven policies in Japan.

- Description
- This essay investigates the politics of motherhood in Breeder by extension the third wave's thinking on reproductive rights and motherhood. While Breeder recounts the experiences of young women carrying on the feminist struggle for reproductive rights and childcare, it also reveals the third wave's problematic celebration of 'choice.' Breeder's mission falters when compared with Sapphire's novel PUSH (1996), a feminist work of fiction about an African American teenage mother with two children living in Harlem. Sapphire's novel conjures the genealogy of the term 'breeder' as a racist label for black mothers from slavery through welfare reform.

- Description
- Author explores the impact of parental leave legislation on parents by using two very different approaches: that of the United States1 and that of the Netherlands. Author examines whether parents are satisfied with their respective country’s family policies and do these policies help parents do what they intend to do—actually help parents juggle raising children, especially young children, with paid work outside the home. Author also investigates to what extent each approach to family policies really help reconcile work and family life.
