- Description
- Special consideration in this volume is given to gender issues arising during periods when upheaval challenged colonial regimes, which often resulted in decolonization and independence. Chapters also reveal how former colonies transitioned into ‘nations,’ along with transnational dynamics that took place among modern states. A common thread woven through each article is the matter of precisely who it was that deserved to be treated and recognized as fully human in an era of imperial exchanges and ongoing capitalist globalization. Authors describe hemes as labour, commodities, fashion, mobility, and activism while exploring the dynamics of empire in destinations ranging from Africa and the Americas to Europe and Asia. .Originally published as Gender & History Volume 26 Issue 3

- Description
- Domestic and caregiving work has been at the core of human existence throughout history. Poorly paid or even unpaid, this work has been assigned to women in most societes and occasionally to men often as enslaved, indentures, 'adopted' workers. While some use domestic service as training for their own future independent households, others are confined to it for life and try to avoid damage to their identities (Part One). Employment conditions are even worse in colonizer-colonized dichotomies, in which the subalternized have to run the households of administrators who believe they are running an empire (Part Two). Societies and states set the discriminatory rules, those employed develop strategies of resistance or self-protection (Part Three).

- Description
- This volume gathers essays from scholars of ancient history, archaeology, and physical anthropology to create an overview of the lives of women in antiquity. The book is divided into ten sections, nine focusing on a particular area, and also includes almost 200 images, maps, and charts. The sections cover Mesopotamia, Egypt, Anatolia, Cyprus, the Levant, the Aegean, Italy, and Western Europe, and include many lesser-known cultures such as the Celts, Iberia, Carthage, the Black Sea region, and Scandinavia. Women's experiences are explored, from ordinary daily life to religious ritual and practice, to motherhood, childbirth, sex, and building a career. Forensic evidence is also treated for the actual bodies of ancient women.

- Description
- Organized according to three themes, 'Censorship and the Body,' 'Female Authority and Legal Discourse' and 'Private Lives and Public Opinions,' the essays in this collection focus on women’s knowledge and the discursive traces of their daily concerns found in various colonial genres. Women are considered as agents of history and as authors of written records produced either by their own hand or by means of dictations, collaborations, or rewritings of their oral renditions. Inhabiting the territories of the Iberian colonies from Peru to New Spain, the women studied in this volume come from different ethnic and social backgrounds, from African slaves to the indigenous elite and to those who arrived from Iberia and were known as 'Old Christians'

- Description
- This book engages current scholarship on women in Texas, the South, and the United States. It provides insights into Texas’s geographic position, bordering on the West and sharing a history with Mexico, while analyzing the ways in which Texas stories mirror a larger American narrative. The biographies and essays illustrate a diversity among Texas women, reflecting experiences ranging from those of dispossessed enslaved women to wealthy patrons of the arts. That history also captures the ways in which women’s lives reflect both personal autonomy and opportunities to engage in the public sphere.

- Description
- Over twenty-nine chapters, this handbook illustrates how women's and gender history can shape how we view the past, looking at how gender influenced people's lives as they participated in migration, colonialism, trade, warfare, artistic production, and community building. Theoretically cutting edge, each chapter is alive with colorful historical characters, from young Chicanas transforming urban culture, to free women of color forging abolitionist doctrines, Asian migrant women defending the legitimacy of their marriages, and transwomen fleeing incarceration. Together, their lives constitute the history of a continent.

The volume includes topics such as black resistance, black heritage tours, anti-black Pete movement and white innocence in the Netherlands.

- Description
- This issue of the Yearbook of women's history considers the Dutch colonial legacy, including historical and current narratives in the Netherlands and its (former) colonies. It consists of three parts. In the first part, contributors focus on the silent archive, as in an essay on free and enslaved Asian women in European and Eurasian households in the 18th century. The second part offers biographical counternarratives, such as the interview article with a mother and her son about the 30 May 1969 uprising on Curaçao. In the third part, authors reflect on the colonial legacies of museums and archives, like 19th century school wall charts visualising ideas about colonial life for Dutch schoolchildren until the 1970s.
