- Description
- The cult of domesticity has often been linked to the privatization of religion and the idealization of the motherly ideal of the 'angel in the house.' This book revisits the Christian home of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and sheds light on the stereotypical distinction between the private and public spheres and their inhabitants. Emphasizing the importance of patriarchal domesticity during the period and the frequent blurring of boundaries between the Christian home and modern society, the case studies included in this volume call for a more nuanced understanding of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Christian ideas on family, religion, and the home.

- Description
- In this collection of essays, contributors explore the construction of women as homemakers and the erasure of household labor from the middle-class home in popular representations of housework. They concentrate on such matters as the impact of second-wave feminism on families and gender relations: of popular culture—especially in film, television, magazines, and advertising—on our views of what constitutes home life and gender relations: and of changing views of sexuality and masculinity within the domestic sphere.

- Description
- This book connects the 19th- and 20th-century migrations in global transcultural perspective. It emphasizes macro-regional internal interactions between and within macro-regions. The essays look at migrant workers experiences in constraining frames and the options they seize or constraints they circumvent. It traces the development from 19th-century proletarian migrations to industries and plantations across the globe to 20th- and 21st-century domestics and caregiver migrations. It integrates male and female migration and shows how women have always been present in mass migrations.

- Description
- Focusing on issues such as worker identity, marital and family relations, consumer culture, leisure, sexuality, reproduction, activism, and resistancethis book reveals that women experienced socialism in diverse and in some cases empowering ways. This book studies state policy, gender relations and women’s and men’s lives, illustrating that there is no simple, coherent narrative of life under state socialism, but rather multiple, competing, and often contradictory ones.

- Description
- This book asks-and answers-big questions. Why are millions of women financially vulnerable when others have made such great progress? Why are millions of women struggling to make ends meet even though they are hard at work? What is it about our nation-government, business, family, and even women themselves-that drives women to the financial brink? To answer these questions, three major cultural and economic changes over the past 50 years are examined in detail: Women work more outside the home, but still earn less than men. Women lead more families on their own. Women today need higher education to enter the middle class.

- Description
- This reader examines the ways in which work influences our roles in both the public and private spheres. Goodman has selected a key set of essays that examine influential arguments on such themes as the origins of the gendered division of labor: historical trends and economic transformations that affect and are affected by women's position in market and non-market work: the effects of occupational and job segregation by sex on status, pay, and promotion: the ways in which formal and informal organizational culture shape and in turn are shaped by gender in professional and managerial positions: class consciousness among wage-earning men and women: the different forms of gender discrimination that women and men face in the workplace: the problems working parents face and the ways in which different societies, subcultures and genders cope: and alternative approaches to improving the lives of working women and their families in the global economy.

- Description
- This collection explores family relations in two types of 'migrant families' in Europe: mixed families and transnational families. Based on qualitative fieldwork and surveys, the contributors analyse gender and intergenerational relations from a variety of standpoints and migratory flows. In their examination of family life in a migratory context, the authors develop theoretical approaches from the social sciences that go beyond migration studies, such as intersectionality, the solidarity paradigm, care circulation, reflexive modernization and gender convergence theory.

- Description
- This book explores the potential and limitations of the 'women's rights as human rights' framework as a strategy for seeking gender justice. The essays address the gender-specific ways in which rights-based protocols have been analyzed and legislated in the past and the present and the implications for women and men in various social and geographical locations. Questions addressed include: What are the gendered assumptions and effects of the dominance of rights-based discourses for claims to social justice? What kinds of opportunities and limitations does such a 'culture of rights' provide to seekers of justice, whether individuals or collectives, and how are these gendered? How and why do female bodies often become the site of contention in contexts pitting cultural against juridical perspectives?

The authors argue that an interpretation of care in relation to three different concepts, namely work, kinship and the life-course, will facilitate empirical and conceptual distinctions between the different activities that are labeled as care.
