- Description
- Author presents a comparative analysis of the performance of men-owned and women-owned businesses. Author uses a multidimensional framework of entrepreneurial success, where the indicators refer to the financial, nonfinancial and personal goals indicated in literature as being important to entrepreneurs. Economic performance was measured as change in sales and profitability for a period of one year and over three years. Data were obtained from printing firms based in Metro Manila, Philippines, a country in Southeast Asia. That no variations attributed to gender were found in firm performance on the short-term scale further support the findings that financial goals are actually considered by Filipino women to be vital to their success. Over the longer time period of three years, female underperformance became manifest perhaps because these women possess personal and nonfinancial priorities and their growth strategies may be different.

- Description
- Gender functions as a construct of evolving aspects of women's identities and is a medium through which expectations are prescribed, social norms are formed and power relations are negiotiated. Gender constructs that hinder women's access to the public spheres of society lessen the possibility for equitable and empowering life conditions. Facilitating women's entry into political bodies across the world is also compromised by persistent obstacles in women's opportunities in both political and private spheres of life. This paper engages female and male panchayat members in rural Gujarat, India. The main goal is to understand how being a woman affects access to political office, experiences therein, negotiation procedures and decision taken. Facilitating female representation in local governmental structures (a panchayat) through a quota represents one of many routes toward empowerment and one potential means of improving health and household welfare. When empowerment is examined within India's panchayat quota, dimensions such as gender and corresponding perceptions, norms and conditions evidence the middle of gender as a persistent fault-line in number-based initiatives. The panchayat mirrors gendered social realities, demonstrating how complex the processes of substantial democratic political participation and women's empowerment are, in India and elsewhere.

- Description
- 'Women continue to be underrepresented in the management and leadership ranks of sport. Researchers have worked towards understanding the various challenges and barriers women face in the sport industry. This study sought to expand that research taking a new angle to explore the underrepresentation of women in sport by examining female undergraduates’ perceptions of their future careers within the sport industry. Three focus groups with a total of 16 participants were utilized to gather data. Two investigators coded and searched for emerging themes from the focus group transcripts. The following themes emerged in this study: (a) perceptions regarding potential job discrimination (i.e., gender stereotypes, gender discrimination), (b) perceptions regarding industry-specific concerns (i.e., difficulty networking, job market constraints, long work hours, low salary range, multiple-role conflict, excitement regarding entrance into the field), and (c) overall excitement regarding future careers in sport.'

- Description
- 'The purpose of this research study was to explore the intersectionality of race and gender for African American women through their lived experiences of how they developed as leaders. This qualitative study aimed to research the implications of race and gender for African American women in academia. A phenomenological research method was employed to capture the essence of the participants’ stories and to fully understand their common experiences. Results show that the women in the study confirmed that race and gender informed their development as leaders in academia. Five themes were generated from their stories. In general, most of them described how the intersection of race and gender affected their leadership development and career trajectories. In spite of the barriers they encountered, these women perform skillfully in an environment where inequities, negative assumptions and doubts are prevalent. Even through adversity, they carry out their responsibilities but often in an atmosphere where they constantly have to prove themselves. Yet, these African American female leaders have persevered and continue to demonstrate their ability to rise above and perform with tenacity.'

- Description
- The demand for intelligent professionals trained in science, mathematics, and technology by organizations in the business sector, as well as government and academia, continues. This paper examines factors that may influence women's initial choices to pursue careers in these fields. In addition to the many well-established factors that guide an individual's career choice, authors propose that women who choose careers in science and technology have a subset of common early experiences that encourage them to pursue a career path still regarded as contrary to traditional gender roles for women. For many women, this common background is a transforming experience that supports their career choice in science, mathematics, and technology. This transforming experience is composed of personal contact with a role model and often an intimate involvement with the process that serves as an invitation into the world of scientific inquiry. The researchers outline a model for women's career selection in these nontraditional fields, and authors' results suggest some recommendations for increasing the numbers of women in these careers.

- Coming full circle, from faculty positions and a return to faculty positions, females interviewed for this article provide a missing piece in the literature on women leaders in higher education ÔÇô mid-career decisions to leave administrative positions and return to their academic roots of faculty. This study shares interview data from 12 women who have voluntarily or involuntarily left their academic affairs administrative positions and re-entered faculty ranks at their institutions. The study was based on the thesis that the cycle of women in administration is not complete without hearing the final chapter of women leaders ÔÇô their exit from administration and a return to faculty. The study was guided by the following objectives: (a) to ascertain factors surrounding female administrators' exit from administrative positions, (b) to determine female administrators' feelings upon exit and levels of support and treatment, and (c) to examine female administrators' perceptions and experiences of transitioning to faculty and the impacts of this on their lives. This study is a beginning, not an exhaustive examination of women in higher education administration who exit their positions.
