- Description
- This collection scrutinises pivotal aspects of women's careers in Eastern Europe, focusing on the foundations of women's employment and its prospects. It deals in particular with whether 'standard' theoretical approaches, mostly modelled on evidence from Western Europe, can be transferred to the analysis of Eastern European countries.

- Description
- Investigation on how the living conditions of working women in comparison with those of men are touched by the world wide economy: political and cultural changes transform labour markets, frames of division of work, labour organisation and family structures. Women profit by the emergence of working places that are brought force by new market activities. But at the same time many of them lose qualified occupations by shifting from full-time to part-time jobs, from high paid sectors to low remunerated industries.

- Description
- This book assesses the effects of globalization on the life courses of women in thirteen countries across Europe and America in the second half of the 20th century. It represents a longitudinal analysis of micro-level data from these OECD countries focusing exclusively on women’s relationship to the labor market in a globalizing world. The contributors examine women’s employment entries, exits and job mobility and present evidence of women’s increased labor market attachment and reduced employment quality in most of the countries studied. They also consider the life course changes influenced by larger transformations in society and, in doing so, explicitly link the phenomena of globalization to individual women’s lives in Europe and North America.

- Description
- Economic recessions and periods of growth are manifestations of change which have a direct effect on the experience of employees, households and work organizations. The authors examine these trends which generate pressure towards a reshaping of social institutions in three ways: changes in the organizsation of production, particularly those associated with the growth of service dominated economies: the effects of technological change, particularly those associated with ICT: and the erosion of the 'male breadwinner' (or single earner) model of employment and household.

- Description
- In promising women equal citizenship rights and promoting gender equality, Turkey's recent welfare reforms appear to address fundamental problems-the patriarchal system limits women's lives to their roles as wives and mothers, and their labor to informal and unskilled sectors. Yet these policies, guided by the process of accession to the European Union, have conflicting outcomes for women. The reforms sweep away historic support structures and deem women 'equal citizens' without adequate interventions in legal and social frameworks, thus increasing their vulnerability. The AKP's neo-liberal policies and rising Islamic movements further weaken the reform process.

- Description
- This book presents a challenge to the social, economic, and political stability of labour markets in industrialized societies and there is widespread consensus that its growth is contributing to a series of common social inequalities, especially along the lines of gender and citizenship. The editors argue that these inequalities are evident at the national level across industrialized countries, as well as at the regional level within federal societies, such as Canada, Germany, the United States, and Australia and in the European Union. This book brings together contributions addressing this issue which include case studies exploring the size, nature, and dynamics of precarious employment in different industrialized countries and chapters examining conceptual and methodological challenges in the study of precarious employment in comparative perspective.
