- Description
- In this dissertation the author argues that left-wing women’s organizations played an active role in everyday Cold War politics in Italy and Yugoslavia.Their leaders designed an original, progressive agenda on the “women’s question”, fighting against long-standing gendered discrimination and violence, and fostering women’s political, social and economic rights. During the early Cold War period Italian and Yugoslav antifascist women’s organizations established transnational revolutionary networks across borders, not only between East and West but also between the West, the Second World and the Third World.

- Description
- David rejects the notion that gender equality has been achieved. She puts the focus back onto issues such as changing patterns of women’s and girls’ participation in education across the globe, feminist strategies for policy and legal interventions around human rights, and violence against women and children. She discusses waves of feminism linked to school-teaching and pedagogies in higher education as well as a case study of an international educational programme to challenge gender-related violence.

- Description
- While gender has become a cornerstone of the current human rights framework on violence against women (VAW), a new theoretical concept has been becoming increasingly visible: intersectionality. This book clarifies three main aspects of the incorporation of intersectionality: t identifies the theoretical and practical implications in relation to VAW it reveals to what extent intersectionality is incorporated in the current human rights framework on VAW: and it provides empirical evidence of the potential benefits and advantages for cases of VAW derived from the application of intersectionality.

- Description
- This book aims to illuminate causal pathways that combine to produce the tragedy of honor killing. Socialization within honor-shame cultures, factors such as gender construction, child-rearing practices, and adverse experiences prime boys and men to take roles as one-day killers of sisters, daughters, and wives in the name of honor. The book further relies on theories of cultural evolution to explain how honor killing was an adaptation to specific ecological challenges and co-evolved with other patriarchic institutions.

- Description
- This volume is a commentary on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and its Optional Protocol. The Convention is a key international human rights instrument and the only one exclusively addressed to women. It has been described as the United Nations' 'landmark treaty in the struggle for women's rights'. The Commentary describes the application of the Convention through the work of its monitoring body, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. It comprises detailed analyses of the Preamble and each article of the Convention and of the Optional Protocol. It also includes a separate chapter on the cross-cutting substantive issue of violence against women. The sources relied on are the treaty language and the general recommendations, concluding observations and case law under the Optional Protocol, through which the Committee has interpreted and applied the Convention. Each chapter is self-contained but the Commentary is conceived of as an integral whole. The book also includes an Introduction which provides an overview of the Convention and its embedding in the international law of human rights.

- Description
- This collection examines how women’s movements have responded to the political, economic, and social changes of the last twenty years. The essays focus on the various strategies women’s movements have adopted and assess their successes and failures. The book is organized around three broad topics. The first, women’s access to political power at the national level, is addressed by essays on the election of Michelle Bachelet in Chile, gender quotas in Argentina and Brazil, and the responses of the women’s movement to the “Bolivarian revolution” in Venezuela. The second topic, the use of legal strategies, is taken up in essays on women’s rights across the board in Argentina, violence against women in Brazil, and gender in the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Peru. Finally, the international impact of Latin American feminists is explored through an account of their participation in the World Social Forum, an assessment of a Chilean-led project carried out by women’s organizations in several countries to hold governments to the promises they made at international conferences in Cairo and Beijing, and an account of cross-border organizing to address femicides and domestic abuse in the Juárez-El Paso border region. Jane S. Jaquette provides the historical and political context of women’s movement activism in her introduction, and concludes the volume by engaging contemporary debates about feminism, civil society, and democracy.

- Description
- In the mid-1990s, when the United Nations adopted positions affirming a woman's right to be free from bodily harm and to control her own reproductive health, it was both a coup for the international women's rights movement and an instructive moment for nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) seeking to influence UN decision making. .Prior to the UN General Assembly's 1993 Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence against Women and the 1994 decision by the UN's Conference on Population and Development to vault women's reproductive rights and health to the forefront of its global population growth management program, there was little consensus among governments as to what constituted violence against women and how much control a woman should have over reproduction. Jutta Joachim tells the story of how, in the years leading up to these decisions, women's organizations overcame the cultural opposition of many UN-member states to broadly define the two issues and ultimately cement women's rights as an international cause.
