- Description
- Why are women such prominent workers in the global marketplace? Why do so many perform jobs that involve carework? What political forces have made these women key participants in globalization? What are the consequences for the women themselves, for their families, and for societies and international relations in general? .This book offers an examination of globalization, examining the lives of the women at the center of these new global dynamics. Arguing that society is facing multiple crises of care, the authors develop a new framework for understanding the interplay of globalization, gender, and carework. In four original essays, they examine gender, race, and class inequality: migration, citizenship, and the politics of social control: the evolving meanings of motherhood: and new social definitions of carework and the personal transformation of careworkers. Excerpts from the classic works in the field as well as recent cutting-edge research studies support the examination of each of these growing global crises.

- Description
- This book explores men's ambiguous relationship with intimate caring work within a context where carefree and nurturing expectations for men are competing for influence. For men, to be more involved carers clashes with commonly valued expectations of them as men and this book analyses how men confront this contradictory expectation.

- Description
- ‘Gender and Care Cutting Edge Pack’ includes an overview report: a collection of supporting resources, such as key texts, case studies, tools, guides, and organisations: and issue 20 (february 2009) of Bridge Bulletin , a bulletin on gender and development. 'The Pack' assesses how it might be possible to move towards a world in which individuals and society recognise and value the importance of different forms of care, but without reinforcing care work as something that only women can or should do. It discusses why care is such an important issue for development work and social justice activism, especially in the face of emerging 'care crises' such as ageing populations and the HIV pandemic. Drawing on diverse examples of initiatives taking place in countries across the world, it considers what strategies offer the best prospects for change.

- Description
- Hollway states that humans are not born with a capacity to care, and in this volume she explores how this capacity is achieved through the experiences of primary care, gender development and later, parenting. In this book, the author addresses the assumption that the capacity to care is innate. She argues that key processes in the early development of babies and young children create the capability for individuals to care, with a focus on the role of intersubjective experience and parent-child relations. In the book she also explores the controversial belief that women are better at caring than men and questions whether this is likely to change with contemporary shifts in parenting and gender relations. Similarly, the sensitive domain of the quality of care and how to consider whether care has broken down are also debated, alongside a consideration of what constitutes a ‘good enough’ family.

- Description
- The book's contributors demonstrate how the ethics of care factor into a variety of social policies and institutions and can be useful in thinking about different social problems. The first section of the book looks at care as a model for an evaluative framework that rethinks social institutions, liberal society, and citizenship. The second section explores care values in the context of specific social practices (such as live kidney donations) of settings (such as long-term care), as a framework to guide thinking.

- Description
- This paper was prepared as part of the preparatory phase for the UNRISD research project on Political and Social Economy of Care. The aim of the project is to examine the way in which care is provided and allocated between the family/household, state, market and “community”, and its articulation with the commodity economy in different countries. The country case studies describe the institutional shape of the various “care regimes” and provide micro-level quantitative analysis of how women, men, girls and boys within households “take care” of other household members: and explore the implications of the findings for poverty and social exclusion.

- Description
- This book addresses debates on issues of gender, migration, transnationalism and development from a migration-development nexus. The volume explores the influence of global changes - and more specifically transnational migration flows - from the perspective of the articulation of production and reproduction chains. Particular attention is paid to so-called 'global care chains' with new analytical models developed around the emerging trends played out by women in contemporary mobility dynamics.
