- Description
- Rottenberg maintains that because neoliberalism reduces everything to market calculations it needs feminism in order to 'solve' issues related to reproduction and care. She shows how women of color and poor and immigrant women most often serve as the unacknowledged care-workers who enable professional women to strive toward balance, arguing that neoliberal feminism legitimates the exploitation of the majority of women while disarticulating any kind of structural critique.

- Description
- Children's wellbeing depends as it always has on somebody taking care of them every minute of every day and night. When most mothers and fathers are in paid employment, much of the day-to-day hands-on care of children has to be done by someone else. But who is to do that caring, and who should bear the costs? In this book the author offers an evaluation of these complex issues. She considers the view points of politicians, parents, and children themselves, and summarises what international research can tell us about the effects of different kinds of care on families and children. Economic recession lends the book additional urgency. Must employed parents work even longer hours to protect their jobs and incomes. Will governments retreat from family friendly policies such as paid parental leave and flexible working to protect small businesses? For Leach, what matters most is recognising that children's care is not just the responsibility of parents, often struggling to be in two places at once, but is intrinsic to the well-being of the whole of society. Child care is a problem not just for families, but for nations.

- Description
- This book assesses the scale and scope of transformations in family life and their implications for gender equality and women’s empowerment. The world as well as families, and the role of women and girls within them, are changing. The report approaches families as institutions where both cooperation (solidarity and love) and conflict (inequality and violence) coexist. It explains how unequal outcomes within families are influenced by family members’ unequal power to negotiate. It also highlights the contribution of social support systems, such as women’s rights organizations, and progressive social norms. The report provides policy recommendations in order to support families and meet the needs of their members.

Female empowerment requires us not only to recognize the liberating potential of markets and smart government policies but also to challenge the double-standard of many modern feminists when they celebrate the brain while denigrating the body.

- Description
- The multidisciplinary contributions, which cover a variety of theoretical approaches, are all concerned with transitional labor markets and labor market policy in the new global economic environment. The authors first address current arguments and controversies regarding appropriate institutions for the formation and implementation of labor market and employment policies. They move on to focus on the policies and problems associated with enhancing gender equality in terms of labor market integration and transitions. Finally, they examine new institutional arrangements that they believe will both enhance the performance of transitional labor markets and improve the management of social risks. .Combining a theoretical approach with empirical research and a strong policy emphasis, the scope and diversity of this book will ensure a broad audience among economists, political scientists and academics in the fields of labor market theory and policy.

- Description
- This book focusses on the differences in wealth between women and men. It is an examination of why women struggle to accumulate assets, who has what, and why it matters. Chang draws on the most comprehensive national data on wealth and on in-depth interviews to show how differences in earnings, in saving and investing, and, most important, the demands of care-giving all contribute to the gender-wealth gap. She argues that the current focus on equal pay and family-friendly workplace policies, although important, will not ultimately change or eliminate wealth inequalities. What Chang calls the 'wealth escalator'--comprised of fringe benefits, the tax code, and government benefits--and the 'debt anchor' must be the targets of policies aimed at strengthening women's financial resources. Chang proposes a number of practical suggestions to address the unequal burdens and consequences of care-giving, so that women who work just as hard as men will not be left standing in financial quicksand.

- In this examination of the intersections of feminism, labor politics, and global studies, the authors reveal the ways in which women across the world are transforming labor unions in the contemporary era. Situating specific case studies within broad feminist topics, Franzway and Fonow concentrate on union feminists mobilizing at multiple sites, issues of wages and equity, child care campaigns, work-life balance, and queer organizing, demonstrating how unions around the world are broadening their focuses from contractual details to empowerment and family and feminist issues. By connecting the diversity of women's experiences around the world both inside and outside the home and highlighting the innovative ways women workers attain their common goals,

- Description
- The relationship between gender and welfare states is of key importance in understanding welfare states and gender equality and inequality. Western welfare states of the post-war era were built on assumptions about gender difference: they treated men as breadwinners and women as carers. Now governments are committed in principle to gender equality. But how far have they come from male breadwinner assumptions to gender equality assumptions? How much do gender differences continue in UK social policy and social practice? The book analyses the male breadwinner model in terms of care, work, time, income and power, providing a framework for chapters which ask about policies and practices for gender equality in each of these. This new approach to analysis of gender equality in social welfare contextualises national policies and debates within comparative theoretical analysis and data, making the volume interesting to a wide audience.
