- Description
- Throughout Labour's history, even in its earliest years, women were present in the room. They came from many backgrounds and they worked for the causes they believed in as organisers, campaigners, negotiators, public speakers and leaders. Amongst them was Isabella Ford, an active socialist and trade unionist and Millicent Fawcett, the President of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies. They took on the vested interests of their time: sometimes they won. Yet the vast majority of them have been forgotten by the Labour movement that they helped to found. This book tells their story.

- Description
- With a particular focus on the British printing industry, this book tackles the ongoing issue of pay inequality and examines the challenges facing many women today. By analysing organisation processes within the workplace, the author considers the unequal allocation of power resources that generate and sustain women’s invisibility and argues that women’s power is often outflanked by that of their male colleagues.

- Description
- From the 1880s to the 1920s, a profound social awakening among women extended the possibilities of change far beyond the struggle for the vote. Amid the growth of globalized trade, mass production, immigration and urban slums, American and British women broke with custom and prejudice. Taking off corsets, forming free unions, living communally, buying ethically, joining trade unions, doing social work in settlements, these 'dreamers of a new day' challenged ideas about sexuality, mothering, housework, the economy and citizenship.

- Description
- In the early twentieth century, women fought for the right to professional employment and political influence outside the home. Yet if liberation from household 'drudgery' meant employing another woman to do it, where did this leave domestic servants? Both inspired and frustrated by the growing feminist movement, servants began forming their own trade unions, demanding better conditions and rights at work. This book tells the history of how these militant maids and their mistresses joined forces in the struggle for the vote but also clashed over competing class interests.

- Description
- Morgan explores the experiences of women workers in the cotton and small metal industries and the discourses surrounding their labour. It demonstrates how ideas of womanhood often clashed with the harsh realities of working-class life that forced women into such trades as chainmaking and brass polishing. Thus, discourses constructing women as wives and mothers, or associating women's work with purportedly feminine attributes, were often undercut and subverted.
