- Description
- The authors revisit women, first interviewed a decade earlier in Pamela Stone’s book 'Opting Out? Why Women Really Quit Careers and Head Home' about taking a career break of high-level jobs to raise children. They talk about the challenges when they return to work. Most succeed, but not in their former white-collar jobs due to the lack of flexibility in hours, but in lower-paid jobs in the gig economy or predominantly female nonprofit sector. An account of the consequences for women seeking to strike a work/life balance, how women can reinvent their careers, and the policy reforms needed in the upper strata of the labour market where patriarchy and capitalism operates.

Within each of these areas, various indicators of well-being are explored. While the focus of the report is on the status of Black women, comparisons between Black women and other racial and ethnic groups of women (and men) are presented to contextualize the data. Basic demographic data for each state are also provided. The report concludes with recommendations to improve the status of Black women in the United States.

- In these twelve personal connected essays, Emily Bernard (1967) details the experience of growing up black in the south with a family name inherited from a white man, surviving a random stabbing at a New Haven coffee shop, marrying a white man from the North and bringing him home to her family, adopting two children from Ethiopia, and living and teaching in a primarily white New England college town. Each of these essays sets out to discover a new way of talking about race and of telling the truth as the author has lived it.
- Several of these essays appeared in slightly different versions in various journals in the period 2005-2018.

- Description
- Authors studied perceived discrimination among South Asian Muslim women living in the United States (US) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). US participants reported greater perceptions of discrimination than UAE participants. In both countries, perceived discrimination mainly took the form of subtle nuances rather than direct harassment. Although participants reported the greatest intensity of perceived discrimination at work, hijabis (women who wear the Islamic headscarf) felt this more than non-hijabis. Conversely, non-hijabis felt greater intensity of discrimination in social spaces within Muslim contexts than hijabis. Despite feeling most comfortable socializing with either Muslims or South Asians, participants felt that, aside from strangers, their greatest sources of perceived discrimination also came from within their religious or cultural groups. Discussion of perceived discrimination touches upon the social aspects of being a South Asian Muslim in a Western secular context and a globalized Islamic one.

The Impostor Phenomenon (IP) asserts that many successful people feel like frauds that will be discovered in time. Twenty-nine women in leadership were interviewed in this qualitative study, and it was discovered that the majority of them do not have impostor feelings. Their confidence can be attributed to strong relationships with mentors, romantic partners, and other women in leadership.'

Tongson interweaves the story of her namesake’s rise to fame in the 1960's and '70s with the trans-Pacific journey of herself and her musicians family between her native Philippines - where imitations of American pop styles flourished - and Carpenter's Southern California, and between notions of romance and queer desires.

- 'This dissertation will analyze representations of Afghan women wearing a burqa and the specific ways in which such images are constructed. I will focus on specific representations that were originally created in the Netherlands, France, Sweden, and the United States. These representations range from media discourses to visual arts and political discourses but they constitute two sets of interventions. In the first part of the dissertation, I focus on representations of the burqa worn by women in Afghanistan (over there, where the archetype sees them as oppressed by their culture), and in the second part of the dissertation, I turn to images that represent the burqa in our midst, within “our” Western world. And this time, the woman is represented as a threat as well as a victim.'

- The author compiled existing theoretical and empirical research on food, gender, and intersectionality in the Global North and especially in the United States to offer a framework from which to understand how gender is central to food systems. Reseach reveals gendered patterns in the division of labour and power in production (growing), distribution (shopping), preparing (cooking) to the consumption (eating) of food. The public (market) and private (home) aspects of each phase are explored together, processes that are often researched and written about separately but are closely connected.

- Description
- The author maps how transnational itineraries of Indian beauty and fashion shaped South Asian American cultural identities and racialized belonging from the 1990s through the first decade of the twenty-first century. She observes how diasporic subjects engage with and respond to various encounters with Indian beauty and fashion. .She examines a range of literature, visual art, and live performance, such as novels by Bharati Mukherjee and Jhumpa Lahiri, young adult literature, performance art by Shailja Patel, beauty and adornment practices, as well as objects of popular culture including an Indian American fashion doll, Reddy challenges fashion and beauty as a set of dematerialized, overly commodified cultural practices. She argues instead that beauty and fashion structure South Asian Americans' uneven access to social mobility, capital, and citizenship, and she demonstrates their varying capacities to produce social attachments across national, class, racial, gender, and generational divides.

Few studies have investigated differences among and between women and the influences impacting such differences. Generational differences of individuals can influence values and preferences (Arsenault, 2004) as well as impact the organizational functioning of colleges and universities in the United States. Therefore, this mixed-method study explored these differences among female administrators in higher education. Quantitative analysis indicated generational differences in managerial practices among female leaders. However, more similarities than differences among the generational cohorts were discovered in the qualitative analysis. Implications for practice midlevel women administrators in student affairs are discussed.'

- Description
- In 1978, feminist author Kate Millett founded an art colony for women in Poughkeepsie, United States, that remained in operation until the beginning of the new millennium. The colony was founded out of a belief that a gender-specific community would provide an environment where women artists could work unencumbered by social stigma. Millett Farm, familiarly referred to as 'The Farm', evolved from incorporating elements of the radical feminist, gay liberation, and avant-garde movements, creating an experimental community devoted to both the production and the discussion of art made by women. .In 2010 Millett invited S.O.J. - Sisters of Jam (Moa and Mikaela Krestesen) to stay with her at The Farm. This was the starting point for this cultural portrait of The Farm as an artist colony, a feminist community, a social experiment and an act of opposition. Contains interviews with past residents and photographs of The Farm. Also with journal entries, texts from the dissertation 'A world we have invented here' and a map of The Farm by Anne B. Keating. This book has been made possible by Swedish art funds and musea.

- Description
- Fischer challenges the narrative of progress for trans communities in the United States by analyzing the cases of Chelsea Manning, CeCe McDonald, and Monica Jones. Tracing how media and state actors collude in the violent disciplining of these trans women, Fischer exposes the traps of visibility by illustrating that dominant representations of trans people as deceptive, deviant, and threatening are integral to justifying, normalizing, and reinforcing the state-sanctioned violence enacted against them. . .The heightened visibility of transgender people, Fischer argues, has actually occasioned a conservative backlash characterized by the increased surveillance of trans people by the security state, evident in debates over bathroom access laws, the trans military ban, and the rescission of federal protections for transgender students and workers.

- Description
- American writer, cultural activist and Latina feminist Cherríe Moraga (1952) tells the life story of her mother Elvira Moraga (1913), from a young girl cotton picking in California, a cigarette girl in Mexico, her relationship with a white man to an old woman suffering Alzheimer's disease. Alongside her mother's story she traces her own discovery of her queer body and lesbian identity, and examines her mixed blood, her passion for activism and the history of her community. In the meantime she tells the larger story of the Mexican American diaspora: what it means to be Mexican in the United States, the nearly forgotten diaspora's Indigenous origins and America's cultural loss.
