- Description
- Motherhood and citizenship are terms that are closely linked and have been redefined over the past century due to changes in women's status, feminist movements, and political developments. Mother-child relationships were greatly affected by political decisions during the early 1900s, and the maternal role has been transformed over the years. To understand the dilemmas faced by women concerning motherhood and work, for example, Allen argues that the problem must be examined in terms of its demographic and political development through history. Allen highlights the feminist movements in Western Europe--primarily Britain, France, Germany, and the Netherlands--and explores the implications of the maternal role for women's aspirations to the rights of citizenship. Among the topics Allen explores are the history of the maternal role, psychoanalysis and theories on the mother-child relationship, changes in family law from 1890-1914, the economic status of mothers, and reproductive responsibility.

- Description
- Civil libertarians characterize prostitution as a 'victimless crime,' and argue that it ought to be legalized. Feminist critics say that prostitution is not victimless, since it can harm the people who do it. Civil libertarians respond that most women freely choose to do this work, and that it is paternalistic for the government to limit a person's liberty for her own good. In this book the author argues that although most prostitution is voluntary, paternalistic prostitution laws in some form are morally justifiable. If prostitution is harmful in the way that feminist critics maintain, then this argument for prostitution laws is not moralistic and some prostitution laws violate no one's rights. Paternalistic prostitution laws in some form can be consistent with the fundamental principles of contemporary liberalism.

- Description
- Does gender make a difference to the way the judiciary works and should work? Or, is gender blindness a built-in prerequisite of judicial objectivity? If gender does make a difference, how might this be defined? These are the key questions posed in this collection of essays. The book's pressing topicality is underlined by the fact that male opposition to women's admission to, and progress within, the judicial profession has been largely based on the argument that, because of their gender, women are naturally programmed to show empathy, partiality, and gendered prejudice - in short, essential qualities running directly counter to the need for judicial bjectivity. There remains a more or less pronounced glass ceiling to women's judicial careers.

- communisme, lagere klasse, gelijke behandeling, feminisme, Nederland, Verenigd Koninkrijk, 1950-1999
- Description
- This article explores communists' attitudes toward gender roles and sexuality in Britain and the Netherlands during the Cold War (ca. 1948-1970). It looks at the changing roles of women in the communist movement in the public sphere, as well as the changes in pratice of gender relations in the private sphere. This article, which is based on interviews with Dutch and British individuals raised in communist families, argues that communist children who were taught progressive theories while simultaneously witnessing traditional practices in the home were spurred to feminist thinking and so joined the movement in its early stages. In the light of these findings, this article makes the case for the inclusion of communists in the forefront of feminism in Britain and the Netherlands.
